I am not sure what to do, I have the game set-up but I am having issues publishing it in VB as some IRC peeps helped me find out. I'm not sure if I should just say screw it, make it in Java and then go from there. If thats the case it's going to take considerably longer as I'm at a beginner level in Java as of now. |
ok cool well let me know where you wanna go with it.

Super Update:
Sehk was able to load and play the game. It requires a long winded work around that I'm looking into fixing. Once that is done (hopefully tonight) I will make it available for download to test/critique. This is very rough and very barebones and I'll be updating it as time is available. At this time it is 14 MB and if you wish to play it you will need a dropbox account and to send me your e-mail.

The installer works perfectly, BTW. Much better than just changing it by hand, i imagine
But the hero still has a white box around him, and seeing as the image files for the hero don't (they have transparency set up correctly), it must be a programming issue.

Yea, I have been trying to get a work around for that the problem is that the image is transparent but it for some reason is taking that transparency all the way to the background of the window. That's going to be one of the last things I tackle since it seems to be one of the most difficult.
The next version will have the following:
ability to buy weapons
ability to save your character and load with the correct stats
and an updated battle system (so you and the enemy aren't taking off the same amount of damage every time.)
Maybe even some new tunes, dependent upon AndrewMan

It doesn't run on my Mac. No matter how hard I try, it just won't install.

You have a Mac?
Also, I would like to test this game, as I said a while ago.
If I do, can I be mentioned in the credits of the game?

Great work so far Douche. I got it downloaded and played for a minute. I know its a very rough so far, so I'm sure your working on anything I may have issue with. One thing though, I closed the game and the music won't stop!

Douche, I have a few recommendations.
1. Separate windows is frustrating. Everything being in one window would be nicer.
2. The game demands to be "on top". Sometimes it is nice to mix up positions.

1. The same window for everything would require all programming to be done on one form, which would lead to a giant clusterfuck of code making updates and changes ridiculous. However I could probably change the Stats page to load on the window and maybe the town. Fights would still be required to be a seperate window as the nature of the form is different and needs to be since if you closed the form you could just leave the fight and return to the world map. The game over screen could also be combined with the fight form. So that'll eliminate 3 windows right there. I'll see about combining them all, just not sure if it's worth the effort.
2. Can you explain that a little more?
Rydog can you explain the way you closed it? I'm probably going to disable the closing of windows with out properly exiting the game, thus ending the music. But knowing how you exited may shine light on a deeper problem I may be unaware of.

1. A trick in the mean time would be to have the window size and position match. So every time a window opens, the upper left corner would be in a matching position. This would give the appearance that the same window was in use.
2. No application other than Task Manager should ever demand to be "on top" when it is in windowed mode. It defeats the purpose of Windows. This could be an option, but should never be the default setting. So for example, if I were browsing the web on Chrome, playing THE rpg, and logged into Meebo, I would want to be able to switch between them as I see fit. Having THE rpg always up front and in the way could prevent me from being able to easily navigate Windows.

The issue with VB is that it doesn't /always/ listen to your directions as far as positions on the screen. I'll look into it though.
I guess I'm not understanding what you mean. I have the game playing right now and it's behind my browser. Out of sight. I can hear the music still. Is it not going behind your other windows or is it certain windows that are doing it?

When you are going to switch windows, simply reference the position of the window you are leaving and set the new window to have that position. Or, you could always bundle the windows together in one collective window, similar to how Photoshop is setup.
As for the always on top, I was running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and had about 10 other apps running. It demanded an on top presence. I'll test again tonight.

Is there a source code instead of .msi I can download - or a .jar or something. Linux user here. Wine don't like it. Failing that - some screenshots of what you got going so far would be a big help.
Here is some grass and trees.
