See, that's why the Canadian fans were booing the US team. Only Russia and USA have (or at least should) have a chance of stopping Canada from getting the Gold.
As Russia kind of sucks lately, the US-Canada rivalry is stronger than the Russia-Canada one.

I especially liked the jab at the Russian players from one of the commentators :

"See this, Russia? THAT's how you play hockey. You don't win only with talent, you win with efforts and teamwork."
And the US team came really fucking close to beating Canada, despite Canada seeming much stronger on paper.

The Canadian fans weren't booing. It sounds like "boo" but they're actually saying "Loo". It's in Vancouver and that's the cheer it gets from Vancouver Canuck fans.

That better not have been booing, I havn't seen any Americans take it that way yet.

Yeah, it was absolutely a LOOOU!

So happy for Canada and the team!! They deserved this one, and I'm so happy to see them win. What an EXCITING game too. Couldn't have asked for much more in a gold medal game imho.

Also, there is absolutely NO shame in a silver, especially in a game like this. so GO USA too! Very Happy

This gold medal was also Canada 14th, which is an all-time record for any country in the Olympic Winter Games.

The 37 medals won by the US might be a new record too. I think 34 medals was the highest any country ever got before.

Okay... can't help myself. Awesome game by Canada... they deserve the gold... but a few Kubo quick hits:

-As expected (for me anyway), the Canadians won in spite of Bobby Lou instead of because of him. The second goal should never have even had a chance to be shot... he was fighting himself the whole game, and it finally came back to bite him. 80% of the American shots were from terrible angles (one of which went in). He did what he needed to do (obviously), but he looked very, VERY shaky.

-Crosby deserves about 3% of the praise for Canada's gold medal, and this is coming from a Crosby fan. Aside from score the GW goal from point blank range which was set up by an AMAZING effort on the part of Iginla, I challenge someone to tell me one thing Crosby did to contribute to the outcome of this game (or either of the two before it). Big ups to him for scoring the goal, but if I hear any announcers talk about the heroism of Sidney Crosby, I'm going to puke. You want heroism- Scott Neidermayer. That dude does EVERY little thing to win the puck and make smart plays. Canada's MVP is either Neidermayer or Morrow.

-Eric Johnson is a goat. I counted three times in the third period that he goofed up BIG time trying to stickhandle into the offensive zone that led to Canadian odd man rushes. Gotta be smarter than that.

-Zach Parise is a god damn beast.

-So is Jamie Langenbrunner, still.

-For the life of me, I don't know why the Americans didn't do what has been their bread and butter for the better part of twenty years. Dump and grind. Patrick Kane thinks he's the next coming of Wayne Gretzky on the power play. I don't care how good you are, you aren't going to get through the Canadian defense by yourself by stick handling.

-Speaking of which, the Canadian defense is probably the best organized unit of defensemen I've ever seen on a hockey team at any level. Fundamentally perfect, and fantastic at quarterbacking the offense... one and all, those defensemen were awesome.

-American blueliners, not so much. Too much stick checks, not enough body to body at the blueline as the Candians entered the zone. They allowed the Canadians to set up behind the net and in the corners far too much, and in my opinion, it cost them the game.

Like I said... A effort from the Canadians. Big kudos to our neighbors to the north! I'm disappointed not only because we (the U.S.) lost, but also because I think we had several chances to shore everything up and win.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

I basically concur with Kubo. I thought Canada's defense was incredible, but USA as a whole shocked me (and most people) by coming out with such a solid team this year. You guys were Canada's only real challenge in the whole tourney. Congrats to you guys for the effort you put forward, it was incredible.

I am so incredibly pissed that Crosby got the game-winner, because he's going to be the Olympic hero now. But as Kubo said, he has brought nothing to the team except for getting in the way and fucking up breakaways.

Bobby Lu...Oh dear. Now, Vancouver is my team, but I can't stand Luongo. He is the only goalie I've ever watched where I get nervous when the puck's in our zone. He's a solid goalie, but so unsteady and unpredictable, that I can't trust him.

So once again, congrats to Team USA for the exceptional effort you brought to the game. That was possibly the best game I have ever seen. And congrats on winning Gold in overall standings too.

More importantly, at least personally, congrats to Team Canada, our record-breaking 14 Golds, and for taking home ice advantage to a whole new level.

From Allan Muir of SI.com.

My Three Stars: 1. Sidney Crosby: Biggest goal in Canadian hockey since Paul Henderson in 1972. 2. Scott Niedermayer: An absolutely massive game on the back end. 3. Ryan Miller: Team USA would have been blown out were it not for about a dozen amazing saves he made in the second and third.

Fucking clown shoes. I'm all about showcasing the game's stars... but for crap's sake...other things go into winning a hockey game other than the GW goal, and Crosby did none of them tonight.

Kubo pretty much covered it. Here are my thoughts though:

1. Crosby getting the game winner made me wince, too. I hate that whiny little prick, and it grated on me to have to root for him these Games. And it REALLY grates to see him with an Olympic Gold Medal. (Although on the balance, so many *deserving* players got it that I'm not too upset.)

2. Ryan Miller. Holy shit. Just holy shit. That guy nearly caused me at least three or four heart attacks. He was incredible.

3. Chris Pronger has another gold medal. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy *does a happy dance*

4. Team USA put up one HELL of a fight. I don't think I could have scripted the thing better if I had tried, as an American who loves Canadian hockey. The USA fought tooth and nail, made some amazing plays and just overall looked great. But Canada (and their unreal defense, as has already been observed) prevailed in a nail biter with one hell of a dramatic gold. What a perfect way to end the Games. Man oh man.

And as we've said, huge congratulations to Team Canada for the awesome gold medal haul. From none on home soil to a new Olympic record number--freaking awesome. And third most medals of the Games is nothing to scoff at, either.

And also a huge cheer for Team USA, and our INCREDIBLE performance as a whole. From Shaun White to Lindsay Vaughn to Bodie Miller to Apollo Ohno to our entire silver medaling (which is CERTAINLY nothing to hang our heads about) hockey team, we just kicked *ass*.

Way to go, North America!! Cheers!

I still don't get all this hate for Crosby. I see it on the big forum for hockey I got to, I mean what does he have to do before people will stop hating him? I just didn't think the "whiny little prick" comment made any sense. He whined when he was 18-19, he doesn't really do it anymore. I just think it's amazing what he's accomplished but he certainly isn't the reason we won, it took a lot more than that one goal. I like Crosby but I'm not a big fan, the shit he takes is just getting silly(in general, especially on HF).

I was really happy with our defensive play, we didn't allow them to apply preasure for too long. Pronger looked a bit more mobile tonight, he looked like he was skating in sand versus the Slovaks. I really wanted to see one of his nasty big hits.

The American team was really young, they'll have a hell of a team in 2014 if NHLers go.

Well...now it's back to the NHL, kinda shitty being a Leaf fan and all.

^ Great point about the youth of the US Team

As for Crosby...maybe he HAS changed and I just haven't given him a chance. The Crosby I know is still the one who walked into the Pens' locker room with a chip on his shoulder, disrespecting other players, whining to refs every time someone breathed on him wrong, and taking dive after dive after DIVE. Believe me, I was excited when I first heard about him, and looked forward to watching him play. I was just very, very put off by what I saw.

Now, in fairness to him, his conduct has been fine during this tournament. If he has managed to change his attitude and actually conducts himself professionally now, then I take back what I said. ...But given what a lot of my Pens-fans friends have said, they STILL aren't enamored of his behavior and attitude, although they naturally appreciate the raw skill he puts to work for their team.

All that matters is no matter how much I support the U.S, no one could have done better at closing the games than Neil Young did. Canada rules for that reason alone.

I actually like Crosby, but I understand why some people don't like him. Even beyond his past as a whiny player, even now, he shies away from contact most of the time. As a hockey player myself, I despise players that won't do the hard work in the corners or backcheck but reap the benefits...

^ Much more succinct and well said than I. But essentially that. Since I'm female I've never been allowed to play in a checking league, but I completely understand and sympathize with where you're coming from.

And off the subject of Crosby...the start of the closing ceremony was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. Good for the organizers, turning such a wince-worthy moment from the opening ceremony into something so great for the closing.

I cannot bring myself to complain about anything today, so instead I will say what bands would have made the closing ceremonies [even] better. Sloan, Billy Talent, The Tragically Hip, Rush.

Crosby doesn't hit but he's pretty well known for his grinding in the corners to get the puck out. I live in Canada so we're exposed to him a lot. A lot of people hate him because of the hype and popularity he's had(on the boards I go to anyway).

I know he's not overly physical, doesn't hit all that much but I've never heard someone say he won't go into the corners and do the dirty work, that's one of his specialties(his ability to go into the corners and win battles). One of the commentators for NBC called him "the most talented grinder ever". Meaning he can play that grind style but has a ton of other talent. I think he handles himself pretty well for the amount of abuse he takes from other players.

I like Crosby but I'm not a diehard fan, I just wanted to address some comments I guess. I don't know too much about how he acts in the dressing room or anything, if I were a fan of the team it might bother me but Lemiuex was pretty bad as a youngster from what I hear, so I just try and focus on the player rather than the person.

Oh and Canada apologizes for Avril Lavigne, sorry folks.

This is exactly why I was rooting for Canada to win the gold. That, and I just like Canadian hockey, but did you SEE the massive party ALL over Vancouver when they won? Know what would have happened if the US had? There would have been chants of "USA!" for about five minutes, people would have made fun of the Canadians they know for a week, and then it would have been forgotten.

I mean, even the Miracle on Ice, as incredible and awesome as it was, only gets brought to the forefront of the American collective consciousness every four years. Ask a random Canadian about September 28th, 1972, and see if one of *their* greatest hockey moments is still remembered.

As soon as the NHL changes a rule because of Crosby, I'll put them somewhere near the same universe.

Like I said, I'm a fan of Crosby. Critiques of his stem from 1) his early diving, and 2) his reputation as a sissy. Deserved or undeserved, that's the long and short of it.

I've never seen Crosby play in the NHL, I've just heard about him EVERYWHERE from EVERYONE. This was my chance to see what he's about, and I was so disappointed. I missed Canada's first game, but in all the other games, I saw very little to no contribution from Crosby. He looked like a bumbling oafs skating in a league greater than him. That's where my hate comes from.

And Hawk, over here in Chilliwack, you could hear cheers and car horns for at least an hour straight.
