I wish. Tickets were impossible to score.
Oh and one more thing: that's my and Val's tax dollars paying for those fucking games, so you're welcome.

Canada better beat the US. They sucked ass against Switzerland. If they lose, you can bet we won't even get the bronze.
My prediction is 1- Sweden, 2- Russia and 3- Finland, with a possible surprise from the US. Canada's ranking will depend on if they start playing like a team or not. They can end up anywhere.

You can't really say much bad about team Canada tonight. Ryan Miller was just a beast between the pipes. 40+ saves.

I can say Niedermeyer and Pronger didn't do much for the whole game
But yes, they did play very well. Thankfully, the result of this game is mostly irrevelant, as the extra match they'll have to do will be against Germany.
Oh, and they'll have to play Russia in the Quarterfinals. Hopefully this means Russia will be eliminated early.

If Brodeur plays like that(he had a couple massive brain farts, a long with Pronger on the one goal) I wouldn't call the Germany game a sure thing, they are pretty similar to the Swiss but with worse goaltending. It should be a sure thing but man there were some critical mistakes in that game.
Ryan Miller was great, very impressive performance tonight.

The loss to USA is still irrevelant, as if they can't beat Germany, they wouldn't be able to beat the other 6-7 teams better than Germany.

I was not happy to come home and see that hockey score...I love Team USA, but no onedown here gives a shit about hockey. I'd much rather see the Canadians win the gold, and enjoy watching a country who truly cares about the sport celebrate. (I'd feel exactly the opposite way if the sport were, say, American football.) Oh well...this means I get to watch one extra Canada game, so it can't be all bad. Don't let me down, boys!! (Or gals...the Canadian women are just beasts. If they go into the gold medal game against USA...crikey is that gonna be the game of the Games.)
In other news, I may be the only figure skating fan here, but hooray for the Hometown Canadian favorites winning the Original Dance in Ice Dancing! The Americans are close too, and I don't really care what order they get on the podium as long as they both do. (I'm partial to the Canadian pair in this event just because their dance was so much more fun to watch.) Besides, anyone who keeps that godawful Russian pair and their ugly, insultingly insensitive "aboriginal" dance out of the medals is a-ok with me.
Oh, and this is late gloating, but NEENER-NEENER to Evgeni Plushenko and his shitty skating! No one deserved that gold more than Evan Lysechek, and its great to see a US Man on the top of the olympic podium again.

I give many shits about Hockey. I guarantee you that I am the biggest hockey fan on this forum, haha.
EDIT: It's total bullshit that the game was not on NBC. It's 2010 and the game can't be in HD?

I think the biggest hockey fan would be a three way tie between you, me, and Hawk. I'm a huge hockey fan as well.

Holy shit I had the exact same reaction to the HD thing! Its one of the biggest hockey games of the tournament, and I'm watching it on channel 84? What the hell?

^ Quite happy! I'm thrilled the Canadians got to win on their home turf. Our American team is young, and will absolutely be top contenders in 2014--and there is NO shame in silver, epsecially since the US has no real ice dance tradition.
I do wish that idiotic Russian pair had landed 4th or lower...it really grates on me to see them win a medal after their bullshit original dance (which didn't even really meet ISU rules for the OD ANYWAY, in addition to being racially insensitive and just plain BAD, but that's a WHOLE other rant you do not want to hear.)
Still. Overall very pleased with the result .

Well, the Russians kept winning all the time, so seeing them go from Gold to Bronze is still pretty nice, and much better than I expected.
The American and Canadian couples know each other pretty well, so they were probably very happy to have both done so well.
And now about hockey : are they having problems with the nets? It happened at least twice that the puck pierced through it.
Maybe the fact I couldn't even see the puck at the normal speed replay has something to do with it...

Fucking nice day for Canada in general. We might not be able to place first for the number of medals, but we're in good position for the number of Gold medals.

This this AND FUCKING THIS!!!!!!
It feels so weird to be cheering Crosby and 'not liking' Ovechekin. Crosby is an egotistical ass, and I've always respected Ovie as a person and as a player. I'll just chalk this up to "Olympic spirit" and enjoy the victory! Great, btw, to see Pronger blasting the net from the blue line. Good ol' Prongs...why did you abandon us Oilers fans? WHY???
I'm glad to see the USA advancing too. Absolutely rooting for them to get a medal, preferably silver.
And well said Lava, it was a GREAT day for Canada in general. Good for Team Canada...nice to finally see a big medal day like this for them!

I hunkered down in my chair at 3:35. Having just gotten off the bus coming from campus, I ran to my apartment to catch what I could of the United States-Switzerland game. Upon flipping on the television, I was relieved to see that there was more than half the game left. I was worried to see that as I had expected, Jonas Hiller was stoning us. Throughout the course of that game, however, I was never really worried. My fellow countrymen were outshooting and outplaying the Swiss, and eventually, the wall would come down. And come down it did, in true North American hockey fashion. A rough-and-tumble, blue collar goal by Parise. Then, I had heard something I didn't expect. It started off light... like a bus turning a corner in the distance.
"Maybe I'm not hearing correctly," I thought, quick to dismiss what I thought I heard. Then I heard it again. Growing louder. This sound certainly wasn't universal coming from the thousands of faces on my TV, but there it was, unmistakable. From a large contingent of Canada hockey fans.... boos. Our North American comrades were booing us against the Swiss. My fears were realized when the Swiss hit a post and the crowd erupted at the possiblity of a goal against the US.
Now, I have by no means ever played any ice hockey near Olympic level. I did, however, play in high school and college and played with several junior players from Quebec and Toronto. If there is one defining line in international hockey, it's this: there's North American hockey, and European hockey, and you are allies with those in your school. Even Les Quebecois (did I spell that right?), despite kind of being dicks, were always firmly in the "fuck the Europeans" camp. Now this.
I was rooting for Canada. I ENJOY rooting for Canada. I modeled my goaltending style off two premier Canadian netminders. But after hearing a large contingent of Canadian fans firmly in the camp AGAINST the U.S., I now hope there is a rematch in the gold medal game, and the U.S. stomps a mudhole in the Canadian national team.
Tomorrow, when I wake up, I will love my Canadian brethren again. But today, I shake my fist to the North in defiance. Damn you, Canucks! Damn yoooooou!
I feel cheated on.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us. |

^ I think that stopped around the time *we* started booing their anthem during NHL games, Kubo. (Granted, that's not nearly as widespread as it was a couple years ago, but it still pisses me off to no end just thinking about it.)
Are you SURE it was boos though? I was convinced the entire crowd was booing *their own* team in the game last night, until it suddenly dawned on me that they were shouting, "LOOOOOOU!" for our goalie, Luongo .

Oh no. I'm positive . And while of course I'm rooting for my good ol' red, white, and blue... I can't stay mad at Canada. They're like that pretty girlfriend that spills your Diet Dr. Pepper. Sure, you're pissed for a second, but then she makes eyes at you and you go make out.
And don't worry... you can count what I said above as fun ribbing. I really do like Canada and her citizens.... except Les Quebecois. I never get tired of talking about what douchebags they are. If you ever see anybody from the Quebec Major Junior league, punch them in the balls and tell them Kubo sent you. Ironic that Brodeur was essentially the blueprint for how I modeled my playing when I was younger (and still).

Which goalies did you take after Kubo?
And, having gone to Vancouver last week, I can tell you that these are not your regular Canadian hockey fans. I got off the skytrain and a bunch of Canadians started chanting "U-S-A! You are gay!" to some Americans. The Olympics is an event, the cool thing to do. There's too many fake fans in those stands.
And yes Hawk, they were chanting Luu
