How do you hit the only tree within 250 miles? The guy must've been mad drunk.

RIP Hacker.

Agreed. Trees in general are awesome, plus they help let us breathe.

Those links are pretty sweet, except the one about the poor Prometheus tree. 5000 years old...holy shit, and someone comes and cuts it down. Sad . That's sad. While I love science and understand the need to sacrifice some things for the sake of learning, this seems pretty lame. *sigh*

The guy who cut it down must have felt terrible when he realized what he had done.

I really doubt he had any concept of what his actions would result in.

That's true. I guess they had no way of knowing. Seriously though, can't they develop some way to...I dunno, take a core sample from a tree? It looks like he was deliberately out to find the oldest tree he could by cutting them down, so this was kinda bound to happen. Is there no way to tell a tree's age without killing it?

This reminds me of those redwood segments I see for sale in Home Depot sometimes. Its a glazed section of a redwood, with brass plaques on some of the rings telling the year and what important event happened in history (i.e. ""1492--Columbus discovers America" "1776--American Revolution.") My first thought was always, holy shit its amazing what that tree has lived through. My second thought was always, well it won't live through anymore now. Sad Not that anything can live forever, and at least that's a cool momento from a tree that was probably already dead (since I believe redwoods are protected in most places). But it seems so sad to see something that ancient die.

Huh. Kind of like "Shadow of the Colossus." I can't believe I just made that leap lol, but its the first thing I thought of after writing that paragraph.

They have a method, his tool broke in the tree and he just figured he would do further research on the tree by cutting it down. I'm guessing he knew the tree was old, but not "THAT" old.

Damn, that's what I get for skimming in between classes lol.

Well, I'm glad those tools exist, and its a shame that happened. If it was just an accident, though, I guess there's not a whole hell of a lot that could be done.

The tree left a note in its will.

I saw an episode of real sex or something similar where there interviewed a guy who had a tree buggering fetish. I always wondered if he ever got bit by a squirrel. Confused

I had no idea the tree was such a douchebag. I guess it really IS true that the older you are, the more crotchety you get.

Weird, I was just thinking the exact opposite about trees. Some are old. Cool. You know what else is old? Rocks and grandparents, neither of which are interesting either.

Hey man, Trees are a unique species. While they aren't sentient beings they are still capable of performing feats that are on Par with humans. Plus Maple Trees produce the only Pure American Product. No other country (aside from canada) can make Maple Syrup and say it's good.

SeverFlame, DarknessDeku, Burt Reynolds,

Be very careful, they are all around you and they are conspiring. Be nice to the trees or they will hurt you.

That reminds me, ever read the sword in the stone book that disney adapted for the film from, Wart gets turned into a tree and talks with the rest of them and they freely admit to dropping branches on people sleeping at the foot of the tree to kill them, they considered it a sport. Smile
