Goal in injury time. Suh-weet.
Still don't know who the US will face in the first round of Knockout play, but it could be the loser of the Germany/Ghana game. I'd rather see Ghana.

Good thing that blunder from the referee didn't affect the results after all.

Can someone please explain to me why France as a country is being chastised due to the way that their soccer team played?
I keep reading that France can't save its dignity and they shouldn't be invited back in the future. Did they invade South Africa or something?

Ok, I still don't get it.
This seems about as complicated as trying to figure out the history of England's governance.

USA will indeed face Ghana. If they pass, hopefully they will face Uruguay on the quarter-finals. From then on anything can happen. They most surely will face Brazil on the semi-finals, if they do get there.

Best answer I can give is, "because international soccer is very, very srs bizniss in Europe." They pick on things on a level that I think even Canadian hockey fans would think is a bit over the top.

yup. basically what SH said.
really long ESPN link.
basically, france was the runner up last world cup, losing to italy in the final. so, obviously they had high hopes and high expectations coming into this one.
unfortunately, the players acted like prima donnas. their striker got into an argument w/the coach and he was kicked off the team. due to that, the other players refused to practice (a-la allen iverson). so, all in all, it was a very disheartening and disjointed effort by the french nationals.
they played without passion, and without caring. and to the french, it was a very big slap in the face

Fuck yeah USA!
That was quite an exciting match to watch live and I couldn't be prouder of the stars and stripes that are displayed in our front window alongside my wife's England flag. I hate the nationalism that comes with the World Cup, but it does make one seeth with pride after the sheer force of will that the US team showed throughout the whole game, and I can understand why people go so apeshit over this sport.

France gave them a run for their money though for biggest disappointment.
It is rather shocking that the #1 and #2 teams from 2006 were so easily eliminated in the first round though in 2010.

Brazil proved several points at today's match against Portugal:
- They only attack through counter-strike methods
- Their playing level plummets when they have no Kaká
- They don't have an actual plan-B in case of injured/sent off players
- The only players that do play very well are the goalkeeper and two defensemen
- Their coach is a goddamn blockhead (for lack of a better non-dirty word)
With this said, I hope the other teams will build a good strategy in case of facing Brazil. It's already foreseen.

I don't know, man... today's game exposed Chile's flaws, such as a strategy focused on attacking and attacking only. This makes up for a counter-strike and since Chile lacks some defensive power, they will suffer a lot at the hands of Brazil.
Also, we have about three mainstayers out for next Monday.
And also, Spain won't stand much of a chance if they keep thinking they're oh so good. That kind of thoughts only leads to defeat. They do have a strong and competitive team but they overrate themselves.

What I learned from the Brazil/Portugal match is that both teams are full of players with very silly names.

US sucked in that one. All right, now I can go back to not caring about soccer at all for four more years.

Yeah. Really tragic. I'd be fine with it if they played well and still got beaten, but they played like crap and let Ghana win. Really disappointing.
At least there's still England to root for via my wife but to be honest, their chances against Germany don't look good.
