Welp, now that Del Toro has dropped-out of directing "The Hobbit," who would you like to see in the captain's chair?

...I got no one. Damn, I wish John Hughes wasn't dead!

This, and this.

His vision of Middle Earth was one of the things I was most looking forward too in the movie-future. Sigh. Sad

I heard they were looking at Alfonso Cuaron, who directed Children of Men (excellent movie) and Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban. That seems like a good choice.

Peter Jackson will direct both Hobbit films and will begin shooting both together in February. They finally resolved all the damn issues plaguing this movie. I'm stoked.

Oh, and they're being shot with 3D cameras, so it will be quality 3D--not that crappy 3D-conversion after the film's already been shot.

It's nice that they have a director, and a start date for filming...

But what about a cast? And all the actor's guild problems that had been cropping up about that movie? If they have to pick actors to be in the movie who aren't in the Screen Actor's Guild or the other actor's guilds that are advised not to be a part of this movie, they have some pretty slim pickings...

I'm still highly skeptical, I really won't be disappointed if nothing comes of this, yet again.

Who cares if it is? I hate shorter movies.

I was reading a paper today at lunch and saw this.

I don't recall Frodo making much of an appearance in The Hobbit. Does it bother anyone that he'll end up playing another character from Middle-Earth?

He'll still be playing Frodo. He'll be a sort-of narrator, reading from Bilbo's book, "There and Back Again."

My love of all things Tolkien is fighting with my horribly pessimistic nature. I can't tell if that's a good idea or just cashing in on a character that shouldn't have a place in the current movie.

I had visions of Peter Jackson trying to pull a Lucas and completely destroy a movie because he had a "wouldn't it be cool if..." moment. This seems like it might work.

Well this is the only Tolkien book i've read all the way through but i look forward to seeing it.

I do agree with what everyone here has said already. Nothing much really goes on throughout the book so it could be a bit slow.

The Silmarillion is a good Tolkien book, it's like the Elve's version of the bible.

I agree that The Hobbit is pretty slow. I try to skip the songs when ever I can. LOTR is by far superior, but can be a little dull, especially in the second book where you're stuck following Frodo and Sam.

I just hope that during the montage scenes, they get someone with a Munchkin voice singing about the "strange adventure".

Are you referring to "The Greatest Adventure", sung by Glenn Yarbrough?

Yeah, I didn't know the name...I just remember it in the animated movie when I was a kid. I always laughed at it.

That was absolutely the worst. Part of me wishes it will show up in the new movie just so kids today witness how good they have it.

Fixed.

God, that book made me want to rip my hair out. Which sucks because I WANTED to read it because I know the history is cool, but the way it's written is just so damn boring...

Eh different strokes I suppose, I liked it. It's not like any of Tolkien's books are boredom free. I will admit I had to read it a few times so it all sunk in properly, and that there were massive amounts of bore to slog through in some places.

I guess if you want the bore free version of the Silmarillion you'll have to turn to Blind Guardian's Nightfall In Middle Earth. (ignore crappy attempt to sync the lips with the vocals and just enjoy the tunes)

Also, I found this.

I'm with BZ on the Silmarillion. I have attempted that book four times and can never finish it, but I really, really want to at some point. It's just so freaking brutal.
