The Stones concert was friggin’ awesome!
It was outdoors, and I haven’t heard official figures, but the crowd was definitely upwards of 50 000. There were three opening acts:
1) A band from my city that you’ve never heard of; they’re reasonably big in Canada but not elsewhere. I don’t really like them all that much anyway, so it was just as well that we got there just as they were finishing.
2) Alice Cooper!!!!!!!!! He ruled!!!!!!!! He played almost all his best songs (with the notable exception, in my opinion, of ‘Welcome to my Nightmare’), and had cool snakes and a hot chick in a vampire outfit with a whip. He rocked and totally got me in the mood. I honestly would have been satisfied with just him!
3) Kanye West – I feel no shame in admitting that I actually never heard of this guy, even though he’s apparently fairly big. He’s kind of a hip-hop dude, but not like hardcore gangsta rap – he has a band and stuff. He was ok, if you’re into that kind of thing.
The Stones themselves rocked. It’s hard to believe Mick is 65… he still moves! Their performance was really tight… all the songs were well done and just, well… rocked! I did have one complaint, though: they weren’t on for all that long, and that’s understandable since a) this is a small city that is not a major venue for them, and b) it was raining, but the thing was that they wasted the first *half* of their set on songs that no one knew! When I pay $100 to see the Stones I wanna hear the classics, which they did get to in the second half, but still… anyway, overall it was a fantastic show, though. The stage was huge, with great pyrotechnics and the sound quality was right on.
