OK, some guy in the UK used my Moonwalker article, in its entirety and uncredited, to plug his Moonwalker arcade auction.

I recently enabled hotlinking in a cheap attempt to boost my traffic and now I am thinking it was a bad idea. What should I do? I have three options:

1. Disable hotlinking again, thus making the guy look like a fucking retard.
2. Report the auction.
3. Disable hotlinking AND report the auction.

My vote's for 2 or 3, depending. They stole your work, so it oughtta be reported, and they should suffer the consequences for it. As for turning off hotlinking... well, it depends if this sorta thing seems like it'll be a frequent occurrence.

Out of curiosity, how'd you discover it?

It was in my site logs. Since he used my screenshots, I was able to follow the link back to the auction. If he had just used the screenshots, I wouldn't mind; that's why I enabled hotlinking again. However, the fact that he stole my words and didn't give me credit crosses the line.

Yeah, I definitely say report him. As for disabling hotlinking, I'm not sure it's worth it unless that sort of thing keeps happening.

I might do it temporarily just to make him look like a jackass.... And since my hotlinking image drops the f-bomb, it may get his auction pulled. I e-mailed eBay about it.... I'll see what their reponse is before I make that decision.

Well, I gave eBay two hours to respond to my e-mail, but they didn't even send me an automated message saying they were looking into it. I feel that two hours should have been plenty of time for them to respond in some capacity, but they didn't. So I went ahead and decided to disallow hotlinking until the auction ends.

I feel kinda bad, but come on, that's Netiquette 101. If you reproduce someone's text, you link back to it.

If it was some kid on some blog, I wouldn't feel the need to be so vindictive. But a guy selling expensive arcade machines should know better.

it doesn't have to be a lawsuit. its an illegal posting of your work, his ip can be permenatly banned from ebay, and they might take actions against him for breaking their code of conduct *which he agreed to follow when he accepted the agreement when he signed up*

i suggest that you email ebay again. STRESSING that it is copyrighted work being exploited for the purpose of monitary gain. Make sure you include the words CEASE AND DESIST and im sure they will get the message pretty quick.

syd. im telling you,you need to email this guy and tell him to Stop using your original work. tell him to LINK to your article,but to take down any written work that is copyrighted material. i've been asking my uncle who is a lawyer about this,and he says not only is he breaching copyright laws by using your work without permissions,he's also breaching ebays code of conduct which has specific rules against the illegal use of someone elses original works.
