Pretty neat. There was something definitely charming about that era's art style.

Toad's art is indeed rockin' the upper echelons of the whimsy scale.

On Bowser: "Even the other Koopas hate and fear him."

This has since been retconned, especially in the RPGs, where Bowser's forces are shown to be fiercely loyal and happy to serve their hapless leader.
