George Lucas's Original Vision of Star Wars continues to evade the writer/director/producer/action figure profiteer, but with each new release of his epic he comes ever closer to at last capturing that elusive, CGI white whale he's always intended. We've already seen that the updated Blu-ray release of the Star Wars saga will include a new, computer-generated Yoda to match the hollow lifelessness of the rest of the prequel trilogy, and now we're starting to hear about some other tinkering that bored ol' George has been doing in the Skywalker garage. Among the additional changes to the films: you know how Darth Vader ridiculously screamed "NOOOOOO!!!" at the end of Revenge of the Sith? Well, now that's Vader's catchphrase, and George Lucas is hoping the studio audience will erupt when they hear it shouted a couple more times at the end of Return of the Jedi:
I honestly want to meet these people that Lucas thinks he's pandering to.
Yeah, I know he's simply applying the stuff he couldn't do before because of limitations and what not; any artist goes through that phase, but you know what define a good artist? KNOWING WHEN TO STOP.
I honestly want to meet these people that Lucas thinks he's pandering to.
"You know what I always wanted? For Vader to say his worst line in the whole series right when he performs his most noble action."

If he's hoping for them to erupt in anger, then he's well on his way. If he's expecting them to be like "Wow Vader screamed NOOO! again! The movie just became so much better!" he's kidding himself, though based on the prequels he has been for years.

Although it's not as egregious a character assassination, dig up the new call Obi-Wan uses to scare off the Sand People. It may be the single worst, most horrible thing I have ever heard in my life.

I hear that the Phantom Menace Blu-Ray has replaced puppet Yoda with a 3-D version. I feel it's only a matter of time before he does the same to the Trilogy

Ask, and you shall receive...
Am I the only one who thinks puppet Yoda has more personality than his CGI counterpart?
Also, Ewoks have CGI eyes now; didn't realize it was THAT big of a deal.
i like puppet yoda more. its more organic. he doesnt look all clean like the CGI version.

I just see all of this as a smoke screen to Lucas' grand scheme of rereleasing the original trilogy completely unaltered and only brought up to date.

Let's just all kidnap George Lucas and force him to sell the rights to Chris Nolan.
So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

I was never a huge fan of Star Wars anyway and do think Lucas needs to stop messing with it, but from an objective standpoint, I really don't think Obi Wan's new yell is that bad at all and CGI Yoda is actually pretty good. Puppet Yoda looks kind of retarded and wonky so I can see where Lucas is coming from in wanting to update it to match the CGI Yoda from the prequels (which people didn't seem to mind).

There's not really any ruining to the prequel trilogy that he hasn't already done by making them in the first place. I'll say that much about CGI Yoda

Vader saying "No" in Return of the Jedi just makes it all a huge joke now. And he has to say it twice? WTF?! Like the "NOOOOOOOOOO!!" in Revenge of the Sith, it just made me laugh my ass off. As long as they don't mess with Lando(my favorite SW character), I don't care what he does to the movies. I have the original un-fucked with trilogy and the books to keep me satisfied.

Given that no one on Earth likes the changes that are being proposed, perhaps we as critics are going about this wrong.
Lucas hears "No, stop the pain!" as "Yes, more please!"
Would reverse psychology work? If adults pretended to like the changes, would he believe that children would hate them and then discard them?

I'm sure somethings look nice and and in some case better but changing things constantly from an original film effectively perverts it. I am big follower of the sanctity of film. This is the exact same thing as colorizing films. Every time you change a film and rerelease it removes some charm.

I would be fine with releasing it as a "special edition" as long as the original is available as well.
I hate the idea that you can only get the original version of the movie on a medium that is no longer offered.

Agreed. I'm with MovieBob on the idea that it might actually improve it a bit--a consistent CGI Yoda for I-III isn't really a bad thing.
Unless you're the puppeteer who just got edited out of history, of course.

As for puppet Yoda, I always thought he looked retarded so I don't mind them changing him to CGI in Episode I at all.

This is why we could at least propose a middle ground. Have original, unaltered versions of the movies and the "enhanced" versions on the same copy, that way people can at least choose.
If I remember right, George Lucas spoke out against colorizing movies, saying that updating them will not improve their impact. As a result of the hoopla, studios released copies of movies/shows that had the originals and enhanced versions on the same movie.
So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

They already have this on DVD. I own the entire original trilogy, both in its original theatrical versions, and the updated 90's ones.

Yeah, but those versions of the original barely count. They aren't widescreen, and there was no effort made into making them DVD quality at all.

Exactly. I would love a fully remastered edition of the original series. Though since the masters are destroyed it's not likely.

He released the original, theatrical versions (widescreen) on DVD a couple years ago. They are digitally cleaned up, but without all the bullshit he added from the 90's versions. I bought all three in a pack when it came out, and they look great. Here's a link to the original Star Wars. Read the description.
