If there's a help subforum people are just going to flood it with lame "HALP I just accidentally a whole fleshlight, what do I do?" topics.

Well, if we did a Help forum. GP and I could do "PC 101" articles in it, teaching beginner to intermediate computer tip and tricks. Also, do "How To" guides, teaching how to do home repair and upgrades on PCs.

I see this as a good use for it.

I only make a help topic when I don't know how to describe it to Google. Speaking of help, I've got another small issue that's probably solved in an easy setting change. Lately on the forums, all the red folders get marked as read as soon as I click one. It's really hard to keep up on certain topics when I don't know what's updated. Any idea what's causing it?

It used to be every once in awhile, now it's every time.

Start by clearing your cache.

The PHPBB2 mechanism isn't great, eventually if we get to PHPBB3 it will be better.

I don't think it is a terrible idea, but at the same time, we seem to be trying to make more and more subforums that have nothing to do with pop culture nostalgia , which is what this site is about, isn't it?

Well, it's not what Syd's *site* is about, no. But this community is far more than just the site, and I think we're tight-knit enough at this point that things beyond 80s nostalgia keep us coming to the forums. My two cents.

Also: I think a tech subforum is a great idea.

If anything, I think we need to downsize. I vote for only having two forums: General and Not General.

Yep. Syd's a mean mommy and won't let us have every single toy we want.

I want this to happen soon! I've also been having issues with the unread/read mechanism.

I'm sure Syd would get around to it in his spare time. Will he? Smile

Firewall could cause that. Also an untrusted site, or proxy setting.

You could remove the network adapter from device manager then scan for it again and reestablish the connection. That would clear any network setting issues other than a proxy... for example, if it were a socks issue.

There is absolutely no need for a tech forum, nor has there ever been. I don't know why people have such an obsession with trying to make the site cluttered by adding a new forum for every fucking thing that crosses their mind, but it's unnecessary. A better solution? A single, dedicated thread in general discussion for computer issues. Go do that. Problem solved.
