Who are the best comic book writers?

My top 5 are:

1. Joe Casey (Wildcats vol. 2 and 3)
2. James Robinson (Starman and recent Superman run)
3. Alan Moore (V for Vendetta and Watchmen)
4. Geoff Johns (So much good stuff, like Supes: Secret Origin)
5. Scott Lobdell (Don't hate. I have very fond memories of his run on uncanny x-men)

I'd have to say Geoff Johns. He's done so much with DC's lines that've really, for me at least, reinvigorated my interest in the company. I also like Morrisson a lot, but he's hit or miss sometimes. He can be genius or he can just be drivel, and there's no real in-between.

Who likes role-playing games? Me. Way too goddamn much.

Bendis has done some pretty good things, same with Mark Millar.

Also, I think Bryan Lee O'Malley did a great job with Scott Pilgrim.

I think Geoff Johns is especially awesome because he rarely writes just for shock value. He doesn't try to fuck around and do wierd shit with characters. He kind of brings the old school feel of comics from back in the day and just builds on their stories. You almost feel like you were taught a moral after you read something by him and feel really good about the world. Sure, Blackest Night was probably WAY to big of a cross-over, but I'm glad he's pretty much the top dude at DC right now.

Man, I've given Morrisson quite a few shots, but I just think he's kind of over-rated. Maybe I'm just reading the wrong stuff. All-Star Supes was pretty good, but wasn't nearly as good as Supes: Secret Origin, Superman for all Seasons, or Robinson's recent Superman, IMHO. I've read a chunk of his new X-Men, but just didn't see why everyone freaks about them. Plus he killed my Jean Grey again and mad Scott leave her for Frost, which I don't think I can forgive him for yet. Final Crisis needed cliff notes to understand and was just so-so for the year's big event.

And don't forget about President Goddamn America. Seanbaby still has it after all these years.

Johns is good, although he does tend to be a little impressed with his own writing sometimes.

My favorite writer is Greg Rucka though. Absolutely outstanding writer, and his runs on Wonder Woman and Detective comics were epic.

I also love Gail Simone. Secret Six? 'Nuff said.

It's kind of cliched, but Alan Moore is my favorite writer. Watchmen has been my favorite comic series since I first read it in the 90s, and From Hell remains one of the best illustrated stories I've ever read. Plus his newer stuff is really entertaining, like Top 10 and Promethea.

A name that hasn't been mentioned that I always really liked was Peter David. He did great Hulk stuff in the early 90s, and his run to open Spider-Man 2099 was one of my favorites.

Ah Alan Moore, absolutely.

And holy shit, I forgot to mention Neil Gaiman. "Sandman" may be the single most brilliant comic series I've ever read.

Secret Six is awesome and Simone is wonderful. Peter David is the best writer that Marvel has right now, IMHO. X-Factor is currently my favorite Marvel comic. I'm not the biggest Rucka fan, but he is really good. His recent run on action comics was very good, as well as Dectective Comics.

I think everyone knows that Alan Moore and Gaiman are legit.

Also want to throw Ian Edgington and Robert Kirkman out there.

Okay, Edgington and Kirkman ring a bell, but I can't place their names with anything they've done. Are they famous for anything in particular?

Robin Furth has been doing really good re-telling the Dark Tower Series with the Gunslinger comics

I also like Frank Miller's Sin City books, mostly the ones involving Dwight and Hartigan.

Edgington is currently writing the Victorian Undead comics for Wildstorm, but I think his best stuff is Stormwatch PHD for the World's End event, which was amazing. He also wrote The Establishment for Wildstorm and co-wrote some Excalibers with Ellis.

Kirkman wrote the first two Marvel Zombies and now is one of the main guys at Image. I've never read his Walking Dead, but Invincible and Haunt are awesome.

Alan Moore of course (before he grew bitter of the media) and Osamu Tezuka would be personal favorites.

...Why are you looking at me like that? Go read Black Jack and Phoenix and you'll see what I mean!
