so, i just finished the wizard of oz by frank l baum. i have seen the movie multiple times but i have never read the book until just recently. i bought a used & very good 1959 copy from bookmans for $2 (great deal imo) and started readint it almost immediately. the book is very easy to read as it was obviously intended for younger audiences, but it was still a very fun read. kind ofl ike reading a dr seuss book, they are simple but fun.

at any rate, i just wanted to know if anyone else has read these books or not? has anyone read the other books in the series?

i was thinking of picking up the others from amazon.com but i dont know if they are as good as the one i just read.

I read it back when in the day. Pretty good book, a few obvious differences from the movie. When it comes to kids books, I would most always rather watch the movie, and that's the case for this one as well.

I was under the impression that the unabridged version of the book is really not a kids book. What with the Tin Man cutting off dogs heads with his axe and Scarecrow snapping the necks of birds. (As it turns out, the Wicked Witch had more than just flying monkeys. She apparently had an entire fucking zoo she tried to kill Dorothy with)

yeah, its pretty graphic for a kids book.

im assuming my copy is unabridged. i dont know if they had abridged versions of books back in 1959, but yes, the tin man does cut off animals heads several times, and the scarecrow does twist crows necks. its actually pretty cool.

I thought Return to Oz was more in that vein.

I read a few of the books, I think the second one is kind of disturbing...it starts with a boy who goes to Oz and then ends up finding out he's actually one of the good Witches, and even turns into a woman at the end.

And "Return to Oz" was awesome...or should I say "Ozsume"!!!

"The Tin Woodsman of Oz" tells the Tinman's backstory in greater detail. Some witch enchanted his axe to chop off his own body parts. Each time it happened, a tinsmith replaced the hacked-off part until he eventually was completely made of tin. Later on, he goes to see the girl he was in love with, but she has fallen in love with a guy made-up from his cut-of parts.

Baum had some crazy ideas, but his prose isn't very good. It's very straight forward.

Wow that's fucked up! So what, he axed his own torso off? Confused

he axed everything off. He starts off with one leg, then the other, the his arm, then the other, then his torso and finally his head. They cover that in the book, but not in great a detail as that side story milhouse was talking about

If he hacked both arms off how did he decapitate himself from his legless torso, could the arms crawl around, was his mother a D&D Troll or something?

But then how'd he get to his torso?

Also, I read this book a while ago. I recall the woodsman making a pile of cut-off heads, or something? I don't know, it was a very long time ago.

From what I've been led to believe each time he hacked something off the tinsmith replaced it. This Is A Joke
