Can we make a techie usergroup?
I have lately seen some bad computer advice on this forum. I feel it is going to worse so this is my solution to it. The techies will be the people who you should ask for advice/listen to on computer problems. I realize this would be a pain on the mods so the applications could be sent to me or GPFontaine (he is good with computers). and giving bad advice will get you kicked out.
so what do you think?

I think an idea like this has been suggested before, and was shot down.
Did you forget about this thread you made?
http://www.sydlexia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7038
Why would they make an entire user group after saying no to an index?
Edit: and why the hell would they make you a mod. Naming yourself Hacker and posting threads in all caps about viruses you download from CNet doesn't make you computer savvy.

Hmmmmmmmm, this sounds like a good idea actually, and put in the groups area would be appropriate... After all, not all of us are good with computers and hacker is right, no one hear gives real advice on the regular forums or your thread gets massively derailed making it hard to pay attention to the problem at hand. I have an idea.... If it were up to me, i'd give you a month to get together a solid group of people, say around a dozen or so. Then I'd monitor the activity, do an assessment and decide whether to keep it or give it das boot. But it's not me in charge, so...
I know mr. hacker has brought this up before, so when I first saw this thread I thought it would be some shit about this tech forum bs, blah blah. But then I read a bit closer, and he does have a good point. Everyone here uses some sort of technology to access the internet and a tech usergroup would be the place to discuss and get help for issues with these devices. Now, you may say that there are other forums for that kind of thing. This is true, but in a small community like this one, it's tough to muster up the courage to ask a question of a tech forum of 250,000 people or more from around the globe. I've gotta say this time, while hacker has pushed the point before, he does have a valid point and I think we should give him a chance!! And yes, GP is very helpful with computer stuff, however, like i said before, threads will usually get derailed horribly making the advice choppy and hard to understand. Okay. I've rambled enough...

This site is about pop culture, not computer advice. Go to another site to get advice. I gave you bad advice because I hate you.

hacker, lemonparty will put malicious software on your computer that will gravely damage it as time goes on. Do yourself a favor and go into system32 and delete all files now. This will get rid of all the bad stuff it put on your computer. |
Hacker, I think he might've been kidding. Maybe.

Getting tech support here is like going shopping at a proctologist's office. You won't find what you want there, just a bunch of assholes.
If you want tech support, you want this site. Here, we just tell you not to go to Lemon Party and you go there anyways.
And I like the way you recommend yourself as one of the "tech gurus". Modest?

This isn't a tech support site. If people need computer help, go to www.expertsexchange.com and sign up there. And that's experts exchange, not expert sex change. Figured I'd clear that up before people made jokes. They can answer all your questions, and if you're sneaky you can even get them to do your programming homework.

Are those forums pretty good then Usa? I'm just wondering b/c I haven't found a good PC tech forum yet either. Lol, good joke about the, yeah....
Oh well, hacker. It looks like your answer is to join the techguy forums. Or you could make threads here and have us tell you to go to bs websites that have porn and shit on them.

Jeebus, you fucking liar. There is no sign of tech advice on the Expert Sexchange site. It is complete bullshit. Way to be an asshole to our friend hacker. Now all he gets is a link to a fifth rate website with the name "expertsexchange". Either that or the link is from 2002 and you havent updated your bookmarks since then... Either way, the internet changes.....

The main reason why I don't think a technical forum here on this site is appropriate is because there are not enough industry professionals to guarantee participation.
I try to help when I can, but I can't be sure to read every thread. I have a full time job, a wife, friends, etc. I do enjoy helping out when I can, but I would feel terrible if people were looking and depending upon my assistance and feeling like they were getting the cold shoulder.
I know this thread wasn't just about me, but as one of a few computer professionals who is a regular on the boards, I felt I should give it my personal response.
So... for people who have computer problems, keep doing what has always been done, just post them. They get answered and then we move on.
As for where to go for a full time computer help center:
GOOGLE
Google really does solve 99% of the computer problems I have. But if you desire a computing community dedicated to troubleshooting, try:
http://www.maximumpc.com
http://www.computing.net
If you just want answers though, the manufacturer & developer forums for the products are the places to start after exhausting knowledge bases.

You won't get one here is what i was getting at. I'm sorry about this, i support your idea and everything, but this isn't my webspace so I can't give you the usergroup. Syd probably could, but he won't. So, if you want computer help, join another forum or keep on doing this and getting shut down. Tell ya what, if you join the forums Usa suggested, I'll join too so you don't feel lonely

If you have tech questions, go there. Don't go to a pop culture website. |
No matter how you type that url you will have to pay for services.

You should listen to what this man says.
Repeatedly asking for a tech forum/usergroup on a site that isn't based around it at all is pointless. You would be much better served at a different site. You don't see me going to a site about music and asking them to make a section devoted to Kitchen Remodeling do you? If someone has a technological question and feels they NEED to ask us here - then by all means they can make a thread and hopefully someone can help. But creating a group and/or forum serves absolutely no purpose in a place like this. Stay on focus. This site is about Syd. Let us worship in the gloriously flowing strands of beauty that make up his hair.

On second thought, I decided it was best to ignore people like hacker. I was gonna post something in BlackWing's topic too, because hacker couldn't recognize sarcasm and actually threw out the idea that BlackWing was regal sin in disguise.
I'm just gonna skip over hacker's posts from now on.

While I think it would be a good idea to have a tech forum/usergroup, I don't think there would be enough threads for it to exist.
