Last year, a group of Super Mario Brother’s fanatics got together and played variations of the video game 55 hours straight for charity, raising better than $11,000 in total. This year, Mario Marathon is back, and once again the gamers are broadcasting live on Ustream, intent to complete all of the games by the end of the weekend (or however long it takes).

I was under the impression that the thread's title meant that there is a television channel named USTREAM and that they were doing a super mario bros. cartoon marathon on it.

Nah, I wouldve placed this topic in the television forum instead

There have been a ton of video gaming marathons over the last year that were inspired by the Mario Marathon and I even ran a website that acted as a sort of directory for them called GameMarathons.com.

I got bored of the concept though and sold the website on, but watching the original MM guys do it again should be great. Do yourselves a favor guys and tune in.

Final Fantasy Marathon to Benefit Autism Treatment

Apparently, making the world a better place through obsessively insane videogame playing has become a new trend. And hey, if it's for charity, we're all for it. After a Mario Marathon last week to raise money for the Child's Play charity, this week The Speed Gamers are blasting through Final Fantasy I-XII (excluding the massively multiplayer XI, we're assuming) to benefit Autism treatment, with a goal of raising $20,000 by the end (via Joystiq).
You can check out a live feed of the ordeal at their website, where you can also join in on a live chat. As of this writing, they're at day 2 of 7, and are making their way through Final Fantasy V. We're not sure if they're going through the games in sequential order, but if they are, that would be a pretty damn impressive pace they're setting.

Donations can be made on the site, and all money raised goes to Act Today, a nonprofit organization that provides funding and support for families who can't afford treatment for autistic children.

EDIT: apparently this is about a week old, so they probably finished up today. my mistake, lady and gentlemen

Man, joystiq of all places should know that these marathons are not a "new trend". The Speed Gamers have been around for a couple years now, and like I said before, last year right after the first Mario Marathon, there was a fad-like explosion of for-charity gaming marathons. As far as The Speed Gamers goes, I find them to be kind of arrogant, and always looking for recognition, and don't like their style of broadcasting, but they have a pretty (obnoxiously) devoted fanbase, so are worth checking out if you're bored on a weekend.
