I want to record footage from some games. I tried Fraps, Hypercam 2, Camstudio, and about 5 others I forgot the name of.
I'll probably use Hypercam because it's simple to use and it rarely lags (lol at fraps and its 20 gb, 1fps videos).
The problem is I can't get any sound whatsoever in the recorded movies. Nothing appears when I select "Show deactivated peripherals" or something like that in the recording options.
Apparently, it's a problem with the drivers. They deactivated it so people couldn't pirate music on the net by recording it or some other shit.
Anyway, I have a Gateway laptop with Windows Vista Family Edition Premium. I don't where to look for the info about the sound card, so please tell me how to find it if you know.
If I could get that Stereo Mixer everybody keeps talking about, I'd be all set, but I don't know how to get it, or if it's actually even possible to get it to work on Vista. I tried using other alternatives, like Virtual Audio Cable, but I can't set the game's sound to play through that cable instead of through the speakers, so that doesn't work either.
I might be able to get sound if I used a cable to connect the sound card's output and input together as I can record from a mic (I think), but I don't have a cable like that for now.
Do you know any way to get around this problem? I'm not sure that cable thing will work and need another solution.
Sorry if this post is difficult to follow, I barely understand any of that stuff.

Access to devices and adjusting their drivers:
Right Click "Computer" in the start menu
Click "Properties"
Click "Device Manager"
If it is a Gateway laptop you should be able to go to Gateway's website and download the latest driver.
Once you have the latest driver, then you can start to mess with the audio settings on your computer.

The Gateway site seems to only contain XP drivers, while some people on forums say Gateway has problems with their XP drivers, so fuck that, I looked somewhere else.
I thought my sound card was a RealTek and installed the driver, but it apparently isn't compatible and it completely fucked up my sound card.
That's ok though, I solved that problem. Now I found the sound card hardware ID, but I have no fucking idea what it means:
HDAUDIO/FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7634SUBSYS_107B0366&REV_1001
HDAUDIO/FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7634SUBSYS_107B0366
If I knew what kind of sound card I have, I could actually find a driver that doesn't fuck up everything.

The one thing that pisses me off about Vista is that it seems like they made getting to things like the Network Configuration menu more difficult to get to.

Never mind, no driver seems compatible, but I managed to make Virtual Audio Cable work. Now how do I remove the shitload of background noise...

I know you resolved it already, but just for the sake of being thorough, what model computer do you have?

MA7... at least that's what it says under the laptop, but I couldn't even find it in Gateway's database.
And yes, I only discovered yesterday there's actually info there.

After looking at Gateway's website, it looks like you need to enter a serial number to gain support from them.
I wouldn't list it here in the open, but if you want to PM me the serial number I'll take a look and see if I can find anything out for you.

Well, I already tried inputting the serial number, and it didn't find anything. Unless it wasn't the serial number, as there's a crapload of numbers there.
Which one is the serial exactly? I have those things that could remotely look like a serial:
FCC ID
IC
SCT
Something starting with 201 GZ (and another with 201 NY)
US
IC (another one)
MEX SCT
The one I tried was US, for "User Serial", but it's not in their database.
Note that this happened to quite a few people according to the forums I stumbled on. They can't find their model in the database either.

Ah okay, I found it. There's some kind of sticker placed on top of it.

So it doesn't work anyway. Oh well, I don't have any problems currently, so for now I don't really care.
