With its massive hardware success, Nintendo really should copy Apple and open more specialty stores. Maybe not one in every mall, but one in every major city would be nice. Or at least one in Boston. NYC is a fucking dump. I demand to be able to visit a Nintendo World Store without going there.

Growing up on more neutral turf, I have had equal access to both New York and Boston. What I noticed when I moved to Boston was that people there tend to dislike New York and everything that is associated with it. I think you have been brainwashed Syd.
The Nintendo World store isn't physically there to sell individual retail games, it is there to showcase the consoles and act as a marketing platform in America . If they opened a bunch of Nintendo retail shops they would just be in competition with Game Stop and Best Buy.

NWS sells a lot of exclusive stuff and offers a venue for multiplayer DS and Wii.
The Apple Store also sells stuff that's readily available at Target and Best Buy. Should they close down?

You aren't comparing Apples to Apples!
Nintendo products are sold everywhere. You can buy them at any major electronics store or department store with an electronics department. They are king of their market and have absolutely no reason to have a standalone store that would compete with the retailers. All they would do is piss off the people who sell their shit.
That is the way it works for a market leading company. You don't need specialized stores to sell stuff because everyone already sells it for you.
Microsoft (Software, not XBOX) is more similar to Nintendo in this case because they are a market leader. You don't see any MS stores popping up in every city because they don't need to.
Apple needs to gain ground. They need a public presence to show how cool their devices are up close. Why? Because there is a good chance that some people have never used a Mac. Where is the coolest place to see your first Mac? The Apple Store.
EVERYONE has seen a fucking Nintendo product or two, or five or all.

I don't think the reason Nintendo doesn't have to open stores in more cities is the fact they're currently market leaders. In fact, I believe thats exactly the reason they should open a couple more stores.
Its true that everyone is selling their stuff, but the possibility of offering products nobody else does is attractive to both consumers and Nintendo itself. I say open a few more stores!

IIRC, Nintendo had some specialty stores in the late 80s, and they were the market leader then.
If not specialty stores, NOA should at least bring back the Nintendo World Championship.

So, perhaps Nintendo learned from their mistakes and decided to let retailers make retail shops.
As for the Championship... I could not agree more. I want the damn World Championship back!

No, it was more of "Nintendo is no longer popular enough to sustain it's own retail stores"
A Nintendo store is a great opportunity for Nintendo that does not require fucking over retailers. They could over a wide variety of Nintendo products that electronics retailers don't have floor space for, like T-shirts, plushies, and hanafuda cards. Also, they could offer unlockable Pokemons for the Pokemon DS games. But where they could really shine is if they offered replacement parts, certified used games, and instore repair services for ALL Nintendo platforms, past and present.
The difference between Apple and Nintendo is that Apple sells a philosophy and Nintendo does not. Too many people buy a Wii, buy a few games, then never touch it again. Nintendo stores could help alleviate this problem, by putting Nintendo representatives out into the community.

OK Syd, now I'm not only 100% with you, I'm drooling over the possibilities!
Actually thats exactly why I think the Nintendo World Store kicks ass, the "extras" they offer (T-shirts, plushies) that fanboys like us have trouble getting access to. I think there's people like us who stayed with Nintendo after all these years because they provided us with so much more than gaming, and this is coming from a guy who grew up far away from where the Nintendo action was taking place during the 80s and early 90s. Tehre used to be a Nintendo philosohpy that reached everywhere, and I think the stroe idea would bring that back.

I'd love to have a Nintendo store near me. I'd have a ball going to one of those stores.

Exactly, especially those little random parts that would otherwise be impossible to find.
i.e: I accidentally broke the little white plastic door that covers the memory card slot, and now its always open and exposed. Where else could you find something that minute and specific without going to the source.

I haven't disagreed that the store would be fun and great for the consumer. It would be a stupid idea for Nintendo. In the end they are a hardware manufacturer and game designer. The fact that they can do both well is amazing. Adding retail outlet to that mix is just begging for them to start to fuck up the stuff they do correctly now. Seriously there is enough collectible Nintendo crap without making another brand store.
A store would be profitable over the short term and over the long term turn into a liability during down times.

You are aware that there are stores that you can order them from online, right?

Old post however I have to say that I like that idea alot. The promotional campaigns that they run are all well and good however they should have an alternative for people who don't have the time to attend such things.
EDIT: An alternative that doesn't involve cheating devices. (I want to play the events without worrying about screwing up my file)
