Weird title I know, however I couldn't think of a better one. Anyway I was rummaging through my old video game drawer and I found my two old Genesis that I haven't used in ages. Still inside one of them was one of my few personal treasures, my old copy of Gunstar Heroes. When I was a kid I had to deal with the fact that my family was relatively poor. The whole reason I got my first genesis was simply a matter of good fortune (my dad had won a decent amount of money on a lottery ticket from a different state).
It wouldn't be unrealistic to say that my entire genesis library consists of pawn-shop deals and a few trades with my neighbor. The one game that I cherished above all others was my copy of Gunstar Heroes. Whenever I was bored I'd go over to my friend's house and play co-op with him. It was always so thrilling and I loved the game's music. Back then I really didn't have a handle on the opinion of other gamers and I was arrogant enough to assume that Gunstar Heroes was my best kept secret. At the time the kids I knew at school only seemed interested in Mario and Mortal Kombat. I didn't find out until much later that the game had received a good deal of praise and that it was held in high regard by many gamers. At the time though I was the only one who appreciated how fun it was.
I suppose what I'm getting at is I'm curious to hear if any of you entertained similar thoughts when you were younger. Did you have any game in particular that you felt was something only you truly appreciated?

At the time, I thought River City Ransom was my own personal treasure, only because few other people I knew had ever heard of it. It wasn't until years later that I realized how much of a cult following it has.

I would say Gumshoe on the NES. I was the only person I knew that had it and I thought it was the best lightgun game on the NES. I still do think that actually.

When I was a kid the only light gun game I knew was Duck Hunt. I had never played another until I was a little older.

Another one for me was Deja Vu. Nobody I knew had the game or had even heard of it, but I thought it was great.
Sadly I've never played Shadowgate, which was the forerunner to Deja Vu. I must remedy this on emulator.

I've never actually downloaded an emulator (The only emulator I've ever had was one that someone burned on a disc for me.). I really miss it.
It used to have a handful of games that I want to play again so badly. Seinken denitsu 3 (or at least I think that's what it was called, it's one of my favorite RPG's ever however I don't know where to get an emulator to play it much less find the game itself), Breath of Fire II, Axelay, Actraiser, and a few others. I really enjoyed those games and I wish I could find a way to play them again.

That's spelled horribly wrong, but I believe the game you're talking about is the one North Americans colloquially refer to as Secret of Mana 2.

YES! That's it! I hate trying to spell Japanese game titles however I think you hit the nail on the head! I love that game however I haven't played it in ages.

Commodore 64 games, as I was the only kid I knew who had a C64 after one of my neighbors moved away.

Believe it or not, I didn't run into another kid who had even heard of Final Fantasy until 5th grade, until then, they, along with other random RPGs like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Evermore were my own treasure.

I remember playing an incarnation of Wario on my old gameboy at one point, I don't remember which one it was however I do remember that the final boss was a genie.
When I was a kid no one I knew played RPG's. Then again I live in one of the more redneck-infested parts of my state so it's not surprising.

Doom 2. Weird, I know, but all of the other first graders either teased you for playing video games, or just played Mario or Sonic. I thought it was pretty bad-ass that I felt like I was actually blasting aliens to pieces in a poorly-rendered Mesquite, Texas.

Final Fantasy 1. My first RPG, the only game my dad ever bought for me, and nobody at school had ever heard of it.

You were pretty close though, I think its spelled Seiken Densetsu or Holy Sword Legend. Loved that game too, I remember in 10th grade I did a fantasy story, and I essentially did a novelization of Secret of Mana up until the 4th seed because I hit the page limit (somewhere around 20, I had to cut a lot out, like the entire desert scene and I replaced the fight with the Vampire with the first encounter with the Mech Rider)

One of my favorite aspects of that game was the fact that every character had a backstory that you had to confront at one point or another. Add in a variety of different conversations based upon your choice of a team and the ability to change your character's class and you have a winning game. I really wish I could figure out how to work an emulator so I could play it again. The version I was playing was a fan-made translation though.
EDIT: Even though I liked going through the game with different character I always loved to use Hawke as my main. If they could port that game to the DS I'd be a happy guy. I wouldn't even mind if they gave it a makeover like they did for FFIV as long as they kept the dialogue and battle-system in tact.

Wait...I think I played Shadowrun once. Isn't it like an RPG of sorts where you can use guns in a real-time manner? Maybe I'm thinking of a different game.

Exactly. It's somewhat different from the usual action-RPG people is used to play, and not just the plot.

I didn't get too far however I liked what little I got to play. Did they also make it for the SNES as well?

Hehehe, I used to think I was the only one who actually enjoyed NES Ice Hockey. It wasn't until I was like 21 that I found out it was considered something of a classic.
