Well it finally happened to me...the dreaded Red Ring of Death! I've already got a shipping label printed and I'll be sending it in for "repairs" tomorrow. hopefully I'll get either a new one or my repaired system back fairly quickly.

I also posted this on my site:

Ugh, now I feel like a quarantined patient waiting to die. I have had mine about two years without any problems. Let me know what happens. I am curious to know how difficult the experience is to remedy.

I've have this one since September 2006. My first one broke, the disc drive got all messed up but that one was not under warranty. They put an extended warranty on the red ring though, thank god.

Ever since I heard about the Red Ring of Death I have been concerned. I have always wondered how easy it was to remedy the problem. It is sad that it breaks down as quickly as yours did. I always thought it was one of those things that were blown out of proportion. Hell, my Atari 2600 still worked as of two years ago.

The thing is it comes out of nowhere. I mean I turned my 360 on earlier today to check the XBLA releases. I then turned it off and the next time I tried to use it I got the red ring of death.

On the note of your 2600, my original NES I got in 1988 still works perfectly, same with my SNES.

I've always absolutely dreaded the Red Ring of Death. I lost the warranty thingy (GOOD one, Cameron), so now if I get a RRoD I'll probably need a new 360.

Well I went to the support site...followed all the instructions and it said I owed them $0.00 for support. I printed off the mailing label and will ship it tomorrow. It will ask you basic info, your name/address, serial number and so on. I guess mine was still under the three year warranty for the red ring. I'm sure they take the purchase date as the date and not the manufacturing date. Stores usually scan the serial number to let the the manufacturer know when it was bought. I got this one in September 2006 and it was built in July of 2006.

Oh, wow, my bad...I thought the "warranty" was a slip of paper that came in the box or something. Embarrassed

Go here if you ever do get the Red Ring of Death:
http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/LiveIDSignIn.aspx?redirectUrl=http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/registerdevice.aspx?step=repair

There should be a tab called "Console Management" then select the repair option. It will take you through prompts to enter your info and the serial number and all that. If it is still under warranty you'll be able to pick your repair options. There are three I think. One to have them ship you a box to return it in, another for them to ship you a label and one for them to mail you the labels.

The option to print the label and mail it yourself is probably the quickest way so you aren't waiting for a box and/or a shipping label to come in the mail.

I'm not speaking from experience since I'm mailing mine tomorrow with a printed off label but I'm sure it beats waiting for a box/label and then having to send it off and wait for it to come back.

I hope you never get the Red Ring of Death but if you do the above is how I solved it.

My brother's 360 has yet to get the ring of death however it has destroyed two or three games with a radial-scar or whatever your call it. It seems like a nice system, however I'm hesitant to invest in something that seems so accident-prone.

I'm sure it will, they've already let me print a shipping label. I'm sure they'll look at it and toss it and give me a replacement.

My friend has had this happen and you get a new warranty with the replacement.

I've had it twice. Is it 3 or 4 red sections? 3 is a dead console, 4 means that something is unplugged.

My Xbox 360 actually came back from the red ring of death once, then it froze again and died forever.

I had it once. They sent me a box and I sent it back to them. Fixed and returned in about 3 weeks for free.

Fixing the RRoD is fine and dandy if you still have your warranty. Just send it in and they will most likely send you a brand new one. Of course, my warranty expired, so I've been stuck without my 360 for a few months now. Everyone keeps telling me to "just get $100 and fix it." Fucking morons.

Just out of my curiosity, when they replace your 360 after it gets the RRoD, do they put the old hard drive on the new console? If it ever happened to me, I'd still want my old hard drive with all my saves intact...

When you mail the system in they tell you to remove the hard drive. They also tell you to remove any game disc from the system. You don't send in anything but the system. You keep your hard drive, cables, controllers and so on. If you have a custom faceplate they tell you to remove that from the system before sending it in.
