What is the best way to promote a web site? Back when I made game review sites back in the early 2000's I just submit them to search engines. What other kind of ways are there to promote a web site? Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Are you willing to drop some money? You could advertise on other sites.

Start by posting regular content. It isn't worth promoting unless you have enough content.
After you have the content, branch out to your friends who have sites and ask for some courtesy links.
Put your link in your signature wherever you go, just a link and maybe a little text explaining what it goes to, no flashy crap.
Get a Stumbleupon account and begin to Stumble your articles. Make sure the account doesn't have the same name as your name.
Make sure that your domain name is searchable in Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft. If it isn't they all have mechanisms to be force fed your URL.
Eventually you might want to build a community of your own, but more likely you would want to make sure you at least respond to comments on your own articles.
Just keep pushing out the articles. The more often you write, them more often your pages will be read.

Google-bombing, even it is somehow possible (don't think it is), is a BAD idea. Google actively checks for exploits and if you're somehow manipulating their search engine, they may blacklist you.

I was thinking that but...........may seem like a bad idea. Or I could get some stickers made ( either by hand or my friend) But I should get an Ok by Syd, because that's kinda a dick move (to me).
Arrrghhh.....
Or I just get a custom made shirt with sydlexia.com on it and walk around downtown Chicago.
Again, an ok from syd would see what my next move is (LEGALLY).

Why's that? Is it because people there would see the names are the same and would know I'm just for lack of a better term spamming my site?

There is no rule against self promotion, however people on social networking sites tend to down-vote anything that is self promoted. I personally think it is stupid, but you should be aware so you don't fall into that trap.

Just for the record I wasn't really aware of what's wrong / bad with google bonging, I just head about and thought I'd throw it out there. My bad.
