What little TV I do watch is done on a regular TV, my gaming is done on the same TV. I'll go HD eventually but I'm in no real hurry.

I don't think it is a big change, but it is extremely noticeable if you own a HDTV. Progress takes time to accept though. I have some Sears catalogs with VCRs priced at $1000. I also remember paying about $200 for my first DVD player. It is not accepted by some people because it is expensive to implement right now if you don't have money to upgrade. Prices will drop over time though and it will be the standard. That is the way technology works. The rich have it first, and the rest get it after it is fully established.

The rich also fuck themselves over by buying crap that never goes mainstream.

LOL @ 3DO and LaserDisc.

Yeah, I remember my aunt and uncle had a laserdisc player in like 1991. I did really want a 3D0 though when I first read about it in an EGM magazine back in 1993 it sounded so damn cool. But then it was my 14th birthday about half a year later and I got a SNES...end of story. Smile

Hey, I had a 3DO, and I am not rich by any stretch though. I actually split the cost of the 3DO with my brother at the time, and we were both grocery clerks back then. To get back on topic, compared to other new technologies HDTV is pretty cheap though. I bought a 54 inch HDTV for less than a thousand bucks. Blu-ray has a long way to go for acceptance though, but it will come down too.

For another piece of technology that has come down in price, I have a multi-region VHS player. Those things used to cost thousands of dollars, but I bought min for $150. I love that thing.

I agree that HD TVs are now fairly cheap. I wouldn't mind having one but I'd probably have to redo my entire entertainment center to get it to work with my old stereo system for the surround sound and to get it to work with all my consoles. Right now I have my PS2 hooked into a VCR and the VCR hooked into the stereo and if I want to use my 360, Wii, or Dreamcast I use the front mount RCA jacks on the VCR to get the sound to come through the stereo. I know it is all rigged up in a dumb fashion but it gets the job done.

My next TV will be in HD.

In it's defense, it makes games, sports events, and most TV shows look fucking amazing.

Blu Ray is creeping in, I remember a last year that there was one partial blu ray shelf at Best Buy, now there's about two to three rows. Dvds (except for just released crap) are getting cheaper. I'm waiting for the giant bin of Dvd's 5$ and under each so I can swim around in a giant pile of movies kind of like Scrooge McDuck.

the reason they didn't go mainstream is because no one bought it

just like how people used to say, "don't buy an hd-dvd player, they are going to fail"

well thats why it failed, cuz no one bought it Confused

although blu ray is superior, no matter the minute significance YOU noticed, it IS better

plus i still own a laser disc player, and with certain players it actually holds a very strong comparison to dvd, and the 3do i still think is cool, i actually want one.... mind you i also want a CD-i so take my argument with a grain of salt Razz

That doesn't legitimize me wasting $200 on a blu-ray player and $30 per movie, when the $80 upscaling dvd player that I bought makes my $15 dvds still look great on my 65" Sharp Aquos LCD TV. I'm not wasting more money for a marginal improvement in video quality. I'm happy with dvds and my large collection of them.

fair enough, im willing to conceit that for the average consumer, your setup is just fine, but for me, i always want the best of the best, i want to see those movies, at the best they can look, and the best they can sound, so blu-ray was an obvious choice for me.

hd is still in the early stages of adoption, but soon, dvd will be gone and blu-ray will be the format of choice(or whatever else takes over)

but even at this point, where things are changing to hd, especially, with the economy, blu-ray, and hd in general, just isn't cost feasible at the moment for a lot of people, or like you most people don't care.

thats cool Smile

more power to you, but i LOVE blu-ray Cool

Yeah, I'm just hoping consumers reject blu-ray for now. They do seem to be doing that, unfortunately, the market is purposely angling everything towards it - It's difficult to even find a dvd player at times now. The upscaling one I bought was one of the few results I found when simply searching "dvd player" on amazon.com.

I seriously knew one kid who had a 3DO in my whole middle school, he was actually a nice kid and I should have invited myself over to play it, especially since I began to have an obessession with it in my later teen years since I felt like I had missed an important part of gaming simliar to the Neo Geo.

looking back, how the heck did the 3DO company think that parents would buy a 700 dollar machine for kids who had a hard enough time convincing parents to buy a 50 dollar game? I mean they could have pulled a Commodore64 and made it a 3 in 1 type family system or had it in the Laserdisc format so parents could at least say they could use it to watch regular movies. Philips with the CDI failed epic in this sense as well.

Sony didn't learn anything obviously(PS3), its been proven people wont spend more than 300 dollars on a system no matter what it has. Im sorry BluRay is still a niche market thing until we start getting some 60 dollar Taiwan players.
