I just heard in the news the Canadian government refuses to repatriate Omar Khadr despite ordered to do so by the Supreme Court,
so I decided I'd search about who the fuck is this guy I keep hearing about.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Khadr

That shit is so fucking depressing. From what I get, this kid is treated worse than those psychopaths who killed a few hundred people, because he MIGHT have killed an American soldier with a grenade during a firefight. Doesn't it count as legitimate defense or make him a POW or something like that?

Honestly, I don't understand what the US and Canada are doing. I don't know shit about politics so can someone enlighten me?

Damn it, I'll probably have nightmares about this. I'm even Crying right now. It's like a small part of me died.

People don't like to admit when they make mistakes, as was obviously the case here, and yes, he would be thought of as a POW I believe, Guantánamo Bay was a POW prison if I understand correctly*. Still, shuting Guantánamo down will at least let this kid return home.

*The term used is enemy combatant, but it is basically the same thing.

I wish I could explain it. Sad . I had the same reaction the first time I heard about him. I did donate some money to Amnesty International, who is one of the major groups advocating for him. It wasn't much, but the gesture felt better than just sitting on my ass feeling shitty.

What I REALLY don't understand is why Canada isn't doing anything. The US has already proven that we are complete assholes about Guantanamo detainees. But Canada? Canada knows better than that. Even if by some miracle the kid DID throw a grenade or something, he was FIFTEEN FUCKING YEARS OLD. That does NOT warrant six godamn years in that prison of all places. Try him yes, do something about him yes, but for fuck's sake use your HEAD!

He might have killed an American soldier. But I can almost guaran-godamn-fucking-tee you that that soldier was NOT fighting and dying so that we could lock up a fifteen year old kid and throw away the key (and do god only knows what else to him, given that he was in Gitmo.) Just thinking about it makes me sick. As proud as I am to be American, things like this make me want to go hide somewhere in shame.

Come on, Canada. You can do better, dammit.

Currently, the Conservative Party is in power, and all opposition parties are getting really pissed off at them on this subject.

One minister even said yesterday they didn't want to repatriate him because he is a terrorist who made bombs, the same bombs who killed soldiers like Karine Blais (quoted from memory).

Karine Blais was a Canadian soldier who just had her funerals. So yeah, it makes perfect sense it was Omar Khadr who caused her death, doesn't it?

I had the same reaction hearing that that I get when I see someone fail the first question in "Who Wants to be a Millionnaire?".
