I wish I could explain it.

. I had the same reaction the first time I heard about him. I did donate some money to Amnesty International, who is one of the major groups advocating for him. It wasn't much, but the gesture felt better than just sitting on my ass feeling shitty.
What I REALLY don't understand is why Canada isn't doing anything. The US has already proven that we are complete assholes about Guantanamo detainees. But Canada? Canada knows better than that. Even if by some miracle the kid DID throw a grenade or something, he was FIFTEEN FUCKING YEARS OLD. That does NOT warrant six godamn years in that prison of all places. Try him yes, do something about him yes, but for fuck's sake use your HEAD!
He might have killed an American soldier. But I can almost guaran-godamn-fucking-tee you that that soldier was NOT fighting and dying so that we could lock up a fifteen year old kid and throw away the key (and do god only knows what else to him, given that he was in Gitmo.) Just thinking about it makes me sick. As proud as I am to be American, things like this make me want to go hide somewhere in shame.
Come on, Canada. You can do better, dammit.
