I guess I don't really understand why they made these things. I mean, I understand why they are fun to look at, and why they are amazing... but why do they exist?
Note: It has come to my attention that these are actually not bionic, but rather animatronic.

I would guess that the only reason they exist is to show what the company (Festo) can do. You're right though, there is no real practical reason for them. Also, what the hell kind of a name for an engineering firm is "Festo"?

Let's just hope The Penguin does not get a hold of them. We'd have penguins marching down the street with weapons and stuff like in Batman Returns.
