So if you go to the menu where it shows the songs and medals you have, you notice they are presented in order clockwise of the temples you're supposed to visit. I.e. Light Medallion, forest, Fire, etc. until you finish the Water temple. Now player's guide's and such say you're supposed to go to the shadow temple first, but the menu's and even the actual Chamber of Sages indicates that you're supposed to go to the Spirit Temple.
My question is, in the japanese version, does the game instruct you to go to the Spirit Temple first?

I posted about the same thing during my GameWinners days. I personally avoid Kakariko Village like the plague between the Water and Spirit Temples. But that's just me.

I always do shadow first because it's ridiculously easy.

Me too. I used a player's guide when I got the game in 1998 and it was the first temple in the book I think.

It is possible to do the temples out of order (though you have to do the Forest one first so you can get the bow). I myself just beat the Water Temple without doing the Fire beforehand this afternoon.

I don't really consider that one of the temples though.

Don't you need the hammer for some switches?

With some glitches it's possible to do it this way :
- Deku Tree
- Jabu Jabu's Belly
- Spirit Temple (Child Section)
- Dodongo Cavern
- Shadow Temple
- Fire Temple
- Forest Temple
- Water Temple
- Spirit Temple (Adult Section)
Kakariko village's well and Ice Cavern can be skipped.
Also, as soon as you complete both the Shadow and Spirit Temple, the game assumes you completed all the temples,
so the Fire and Water temples can be skipped too (I don't know if you must complete Forest Temple, but you need the bow).
Example of strange glitch:

Agreed. And as another sidetrack, the Water Temple fucking sucks. I hate constantly changing boots. Ugh.

Ever notice that there is a space in your inventory for the Triforce, but you never get it?

Not in the Water Temple, nor the Shadow temple either (though you can't learn Nocturne Of Shadow until after you beat the Forest, Fire and Water Temples).

Changing the water levels and boots was a pain in the ass.

I don't find it that annoying unless I forget a key, which of course always happens.

Missing 1 key is by far the worse fate to befall someone in the Water Temple. That shit can get so tedious because there are so many of those little silver keys in there, and they are so fucking generic looking.
