Last night I went to a party. The guys who threw it are my age, 28 - 30. They are definitely a good group, I'd say they remind me a lot of regulars here. They love their music, games, tv, movies, etc... Pop culture junkies if you will.
One of them works at a Stop & Shop (for those unfamiliar, this is a very large supermarket chain in the north east). He has been there since we were freshmen in high school and just always kept the job. Not the life for me, but he has been happy.
One of the consequences of this is that while he continues to get older, the new employees continue to be freshmen in high school. Most of his friends from work are 16-20 years old.
Back to the party, the age range is 18ish - 30ish.
It is pretty damn amusing how you can definitively tell who is what age. Some people are just loud, energy driven downing plastic bottles of alcohol while others are chilling back, playing Rock Band 2 and drinking bottled beer.
The group mingled well and there were no problems at all due to age except one.
You see, this was a BYOB party. For those too young, BYOB stands for Bring Your Own Bottle/Beer/Booze. Well as the old man that I felt like, I brought myself along with 6 New Castle beers. I planned on drinking 4-5 of them and I always bring an extra or two for the host who likes them. I'll be fucking damned if I was finished with my fourth, moving to get my fifth and I saw a kid who had to be under 21 downing the last of one of my bottles. Are you fucking kidding?
If he had asked, I probably would have said, enjoy... but what the FUCK didn't he understand about drink your plastic bottle vodka if that is what you bring!
I suppose this isn't actually an age thing at all, it is just an individual who fucking didn't get it. None the less, there was PLENTY of cheap beer that he could have drank... enjoy one of those 30 Natty Ices left in the fridge, no one will fucking miss it. At $0.38 a bottle no one will fucking care. When you see one or two good bottled beers you know cost $1.40 and aren't yours, DON'T DRINK THEM. Yes they will taste better, it is why someone took the time to select them. That person probably won't be pounding them to get blitzed and will notice when they run out!!!
Gah... next time I might just offer to chip in for a keg to keep my own beer safe.

Blackout---Natty Ice not bad? Wrong. I can't stand Anheuseur Busch beer except for Amber Bock. Millwaukee's Best Ice is where it's at (AKA Beast Ice) for the cheap stuff.
Here's what you should learn: Hide your beer in the fridge somewhere.... Buy an extra sixer of Miller or PBR, something cheap to catch the eye and put it right up front... Then hide your good beer in the crisper drawer and wherever else seems inconspicuous, Problem solved. The stupid kids get an extra flavor of brew while you enjoy the quality of yours.

If I were in that situation, and some punk had taken one of these from me, I'd have broken his neck.

QFT!!!!!!!!!
I love Chimay; any beer that comes in a bottle with a cork has to be good. I also love the diagram on the back of the bottle showing what type of glass you should and shouldn't use to drink it.
#edit: That bottle looks a lot smaller than the ones I get. I didn't realize they come in different sizes.

I had a Summit Extra Pale Ale last night and it was Dee-lish. I always hear about it on NPR they say "You can get to the bottom of it at www.summitbrewing.com". So I tried it and it was good. Give it a shot if it's available in your area. I suppose if you don't like hops though, you won't like it though, as it is fairly hoppy.

i have never tried chimay. i dont think i've ever seen it actually. could be wrong.
anyhow, i guess im different w/my beer. in that situation, i would've probably just bought an 18 pack and call it quits. and whoever drinks it, cool. i dont care, as long as i drink some.
if its some premium beer, then i would probably go for those first and if someone beat me to it, then big deal. i understand the principle in terms of asking first before drinking, but it wouldnt bother me as much as it did GP. im not saying you are wrong for being upset, but i guess we're just different as it wouldnt bother me as much

I've always been a fan of Killians, and recently have grown to love Dos Equis.
But anyway yeah... It blows when someone takes your good beer and you end up stuck looking at that piss yellow swill Budweiser...
But not much you can do... Anything you say will fall on deaf ears/be forgotten and anything you do would be a purely dickhead move to start shit over a beer.

I love Pennsylvania. Tax-free booze brewed in the area is pure win. I can buy a case of good local stuff for the same price as some crappy corporate light beer.

See, here is why I am not a fan of PA.
My band played two shows in Pittsburgh last week (singer goes to Duquesne) and while there we drank fairly heavily. Now what I found out is that you guys don't sell (any) alcohol after 9pm (no matter what day of the week it is). Also you can only get alcohol from distributors and can't get anything from regular stores, what the fuck is up with that.
I thought VA was pretty whack with their alcohol policies but I can see other states have it worse.

Yeah, you're limited to six packs from a bar then. I just bought a six of Guiness about an hour ago.

Greg, as a fellow Lion, I've learned to appreciate the good brews in PA.
That said, it's goddam retarded that I have to buy beer and liquor at different places. NJ- buy all you want, no matter what kind of booze it is.

You'd be in for a treat. Chimay is my favorite right now, but if you want to try some damn good beer, any kind of Belgian brown is fucking fantastic. Belgian white style (Blue Moon, Hogaarden, etc.) are also great, but if you're going for high alcohol content and crazy good taste, Belgian brown is the way to go.
One thing to remember though, you have to drink it at cellar temp (slightly above cold), otherwise you lose the taste.

I kind of like it, honestly. Could you imagine how much of a hellhole this campus would be with unlimited booze at any time?

I noticed this with Newcastle as well actually that it is better at cellar to almost warm temperature. Apparently that's how they drink it in England.

By any chance are you talking about the esteemed Ying Ling? I had never heard of the stuff until I went to Miami, because apparently their only other brewing facility is down there, but it's the only American beer I actually like. (And amazingly, the oldest American beer, despite the fact that a lot of people don't even know what it is).
I definitely loved that not only is it the only American beer I like, it was only $2.50 for a six pack down there.

Yuengling is brewed in Pottstown, PA, and it's a pretty good lager. People from PA go apeshit over it, and in my experience, refuse to order it by name. Usually they just go to the bar and say "lager," and in PA, that means you get a Yuengling. I personally think it's just alright, but I can certainly see the appeal.

Yeah. Yeungling has always been a favorite of mine as well. It's pretty much the cheapest I'll go when it comes to beer.
Hmm, I wonder if I can find Chimay somewhere near me... Always happy to try a new brew.

Yuengling is pretty good. It's not as good as some of the more obscure stuff, but is still well worth a purchase. One other notable and widely known state brand is Lionshead. It's a decent pilsner that costs less than Natty Lite, and tastes a million times better.

If you go to a party, BYOB, and leave it unguarded, you're just asking for trouble. People always find a way to let you down, and drunks are twice as fallible.

Whew, Natty Light, just like Pabst Blue Ribbon, it pretty much comes out in the same form it went in. I gotta wonder what beer lost to Pabst the year it won the Blue Ribbon.
I can't bash all ages parties though. I had older friends, invited them to my 17th birthday party (a day after I turned 17) way the hell back in 1998, and that's where I lost my virginity. To this day I kinda wish I'd thrown that party two days earlier, because I could've at least said I lost my virginity at 16, heh heh heh...
BYOB was never a problem for me. I never looked my age, but no one actually bothered to stop me and card me. I practically had to FORCE the cashier at Winn Dixie to ask for my ID when I turned 21.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |
