So I just found a great deal on the first three GH games and a couple controllers. I've always loved the game, played it a ton while I was in college, just never got around to buying it for myself.
Now that I have it, though, a problem presents itself, and a slightly embarrassing one: I can't seem to get passed medium. I want to, because I'm good enough that medium is boring, and very easy, but for some reason I can't make it on hard. For one thing, that fucking orange button always catches me off guard, and when I do hit it, I loose track of my finger placement and screw up. The other thing that keeps getting me is the red-blue chord. For some reason, my middle and pinky finger refuse to work together. And if I slide my hand down to play red-blue with the index and ring finger, I have the same problem as I do with the orange button--I either loose track of hand placement, or can't get it back into position fast enough.
Anyway, all this to ask, does anyone have any tips on the medium-hard transition I could put to use while I practice? I can't be the only one who's had these problems...right...?

All I can say is practice...practice....practice. I'm now only pretty good on hard and I've been playing Guitar Hero games since the first one in 2005.

I had this problem too some time ago, but I'm not sure if I can help much because I'm not sure what I did to bypass it, and I havn't played it for like three months. I'll try anyway.
- First, where do you place your fingers? It's MUCH easier to move the index finger than the pinky, so you should place them from red to orange.
- Find songs in the first few tiers with lots of chords and others with lots of hammer-ons. You should get a feeling of how to place your fingers.
- Personnally, I find it easier to slide my fingers around. After a while you can tell if they are placed left (G-R-Y-B) or right (R-Y-B-O). I still mess up once in a while, and it's also hard on the fingers.
I want to play this game now. Too bad I don't have access to it currently.

When there's a loading screen or something, just practice moving your hand back and forth. Do it like that hand-knife game, where you start out really slow, then switch from the upper to the lower four faster and faster each time.

Somebody said sliding your fingers helps, and I would agree in most instances. Also pay attention to the bump on the center key, for it will help you to repostion yourself.

This is the reason I haven't played Guitar Hero in about a year.

Hell, I haven't got past medium at all.... Try some of the easier songs on Hard, preferably one you enjoy playing. Then once you master the timing, move on to something more difficult. Not that I'm ready for hard yet, but that's what I'd do to prepare.

My advice to you is play 10-12 hrs a day, bring your guitar everywhere with you, class, work, shower(put a garbage bag around it for safe keeping). Even bring it to bed with you, if you have a girlfriend or wife she will have to get used to sleeping on the couch for the next 5-6 months till you make the transition.

What my buddy does is the has a rubberband around the Green button and just keeps his fingers below that. It works well.
My problem is my pinky doesn't work perfectly so I cannot play pass easy usually. :/

So not a big deal lol. I just couldn't resist when I saw the comment.
Lottel, the rubber band trick sounds like a pretty good idea, at least to start. It would let you practice sliding your fingers without failing every song in the first minute and a half. I think I'll give it a try.

Don't feel bad, I have the same problem.
My pinky couldn't find the orange button if it used MapQuest.

If you're playing GH2, I Wanna Be Sedated and Who Was In My Room Last Night? are good songs to practice with.
