So, most of you probably have heard of Runescape, that dreadful misconceived, game with terrible graphics. I know the argument. But, you Runescape haters, when was the last time you played? How do you know what Runescape is like? Really. Think about it.
Ok, to the point. Runescape is a growing game that has the largest fanbase, next to World of Warcraft. Runescape has 10 million active Free-to-play and subscription based users. The biggest argument against liking the game is the controls and the graphics. Now I know I am going to be flamed because of this, but I believe for a Java game, made by a 21 year old with no plan to expand the game and no idea how popular the game will be, it has pretty good graphics. Recently, the game has made a massive upgrade to it's engine, for it to include full-screen and texture. For a Java game this is pretty amazing!
Before..
After...
Ok, now think... why do you hate this game? In your responses please give a intelligent and clear answer. If the reason you hate the game is because of graphics, you shouldn't be on this forum because the point of this website is to discuss pop culture including old games.
I will add on to this later... but ThatGuy is an idiot and wants his computer back.
Also, do not believe his lies!!!

Eh, for a free game, Runescape is good. It's pretty decent for a free game; the controls are fine and you can see everything perfectly fine. However, it is pretty mindless and the communications features aren't that great.
What I'm saying is, Runescape is good for anybody who wants to play MMORPGs, but not want to (or is unable to) pay several bucks a month to play them.

In the beginning, I'll concede you have a fucklot of things to do, especially if you already jumped on the paid account wagon. However, the XP system they use is pretty lame and it takes more and more of the same task to level up, to the point that even when you gain new things to do with your skills (like smithing) it doesn't make much of a dent in the effort needed to advance forward.
I quit playing a couple of years back, but apparently a check on the hiscores shows I'm still ranked in Crafting, Smithing, and Mining. When I played, I put a self-imposed restriction that I'd only fight with weapons and use armor I made myself. It made things a bit more amusing, but ultimately I wound up with better games to play.
If I wasn't so bloated on Wii games to play (and my graphics card could handle it), I'd jump on that other MMO in a heartbeat!

I like how Runescape is free and doesn't take space on my browser. I play about a week, get bored for a month, then come back.
I usually do something else at the same time though, like loading a youtube playlist of videogame music and reading a manga,
sometimes looking at my character to see if he finished doing whatever I told him to do 2 minutes ago.

So what you're saying is the game is basically a candidate for white noise?

it's not a bad game, especially considering that it's free and (unlike most MMORPGs) will work on any OS that supports Java (that includes Linux, Mac, BSD, etc, along with a couple more obscure OSs that have ports of Java). Then again, because the possible market is so large, the community is just as large, thus why 99% of people seem to be idiots.
I guess the real flaw isn't how 99% of local chat messages are stuff like "LUKIN 4 GF" or "WTS FULL PLAT FOR *extremely overinflated pirce*", it's how the game itself is tedious as hell. You want to become good at chopping wood? then go chop wood for the next half hour. You want to level up so people won't tp you to a PVP area and steal your stuff? then go fight stuff for the next few hours. It's like WoW or Eve online, but free (for the most part). Thus why, on the rare occasions I do play as my generally crappy runescape character, I make sure I have something to do that doesn't involve watching the same goddamn chopping animation for 30 minutes.

If I want to cut wood, I'll go out behind the Rugby house and start splitting wood...

I won't play runescape, because runescape is an MMO, and any MMO is a waste of my time.
I have work, school, friends, movies, anime, books, AND a whole bunch of real videogames with a real story and REAL gameplay to squeeze into my day, and I can't spend my time on an overrated time waster.

It doesn't have a plot?
Well is a evil Necromancer/ Demigod is trying to take the power of the god of evil and make himself the god. At the same time his siblings are fighting for control over the rest of Runescape. Then a supossed "good guy" is trying to ressurect the ancient god that once controled over all of Glienor(The World of Runescape's real name). And...There are many subplots about this conflict.
Not a story line?

I never really liked it because the of the lack of specialization. The only way to raise your level is via combat, which is usually done with sword and shield. After all, why waste money on runes when a bronze sword is practically free? So basically what it amounts to is a bunch of warriors running round with swords and armour. Where are the wizards, the rogues, the barbarians?

It has a backstory. Yeah that shit happened, but you can't do shit about it. An MMO can't have a plot, because you can't be the "one true warrior" When there's 100000 people just like you.

Runescape works off a Rock-Paper-Scissors system, where melee (swords, axs, ect.) beat range (bows and arrows), who beat magic (runes), who in turn beat melee. This normally has very little effect on gameplay until you start doing PVP.
The thing with Runescape is it is basically free WoW, but even more barebones and has even more grinding. Like all MMOs of the WoW style, it caters to certain types of gamers. The game has no appeal to me because I don't feel any accomplishment by grinding for days on end. I don't care if people play the game, but there is no real argument you can make to make me like it because I am not the gamer it caters too.

You know whats funny? Runescape was created before WoW, so it should be a "Runescape-based" mmo.

But WoW is more well known, thus more people would understand what was meant by WoW style as appose to Runescape style.

MMORPGs are terrible. They're nothing but pointless grinding and people somehow get addicted to the pointless grinding. I know people who schedule the rest of their fucking lives around their WoW guild's raid schedule. It's fucking sad.
That being said, Runescape isn't noticeably worse than any other MMORPG, and at least it has the decency to be free.
