http://www.retrogamechallenge.com/ | Metacritic score

(A vid of gameplay with a couple "games" in the game being shown.)

It came out on Feb 10. It's a game where you're sent back to the '80s by some game demon named Arino (who is a self-insertion of the host of the Japanese game show, Game Center CX, which this game is based on), and in order to get out, you must beat his challenges in a series of 8 "games", which are pretty much what would be called "new retro"; newly created, and made to look and sound like your classic NES game.

It's not only just the games that make this great; it's the vintage atmosphere-- complete with cheesy game manuals and magazines, NES era in-jokes (that I wouldn't get, but you guys probably would) and all that, right down to the living room atmosphere which the bottom screen conveys.

This other thing that must be appreciated is the lengths that these guys went through to bring this game here. This originally had a snowball's chance in hell of getting outside of Japan when it was originally released (in 11/2007) due to it being a game based on a TV show, add in the mass amount of in-jokes of the show, and a dick publisher that never ever licenses out their games, Namco Bandai, and we almost had a fail here.

Anyway, I'm done gushing over this game. Just fucking get it. Don't have the money? FUCKING STEAL IT. Don't have a DS? Steal that, then steal this game.

I got this game, and it rules. YOU HAVE TO BUY IT. Saving money for something else? Too bad. You are buying this. You won't regret it. You will thank me later.

Agreed, and I'm pissed because it's going to be months before I have the extra fundage to be able to get the game and a DS.

How much is it? Probably 39.99.

Don't be a bitch and go "PRICE IS IRRELEVANT, BUY THIS GAME REGARDLESS".

The price is irrelevant, buy this game regardless.

Sorry, I had to say that. Wink

It's value is far more than $40. It's 8 HIGH QUALITY 8bit awesome games in one.

I've been playing this for the past few days, and I really enjoy it. I'm on Guadia Quest's 4th challenge so far, just grinding to prepare myself for it. Since it looks like the last game's gonna be Haggle Man 3, I'm going to take my time with both of those games.

So I take it that you have to beat the games to unlock more games?

That sucks if you don't like some of the genres...

Trust me, it does suck, but you continue for great games like Star Prince and Guadia Quest.

But if I ever have to play Rally King or Rally King SP again, GM Arino's low-polygon head shall roll!

I'm not normally a racing fan, but I really enjoyed Rally King and Rally King SP. Drifting in those games is really fun, and the challenges always keep things interesting, no matter which game it is.

I'm currently going through Guadia Quest, looking forward to playing Haggle Man 3.

I just got that and I already failed epically.

I had the challenge (4?) where you need 200000 points in Cosmic Gate. I had 197800 and accidentally pressed reset. That was three minutes ago.

Okay, fuck this game. The first two games are great, but Rally King blows major ass.

Fine, stop there and miss all of the other fun games just because you hate one of them (whose challenges are VERY easy to finish, btw.) Your loss. =p

I too liked Rally King and Rally King SP (they remind me of Micro Machines with a drift mechanic replacing the multiple car types.)

Also, I'm currently doing Guadia Quest, 4th challenge. My party, levels 12/11/12, get whomped in the Dungeon of Darkness, but thank god for the Naga Wing item (that sends you back to 1st town.) Time to grind more. I wanna do this quick too, so I can just fucking get Haggleman 3 already.

Who says anything about stopping?

Anyway, since I try out every trick and code in the game, I found that the invincibility in Rally King doesn't work. The magazine tells you to press left on the D-Pad and Select at the title screen. It doesn't work, it might be a fluke. Probably to make the game more challenging (well, that's good.).

What does the "OH-SO-FUCKING-HARD-MODE" code for Cosmic Gate do? As far as I can see, it only makes the enemies move faster.

A lot of the codes are misprinted in the magazines, I haven't yet figured out why. The invincibility code is actually Left + Up, then Select.

For any Japanese speaking folks we might have, or those who just love this game enough to make use of a gamefaqs guide to play through, Retro Game Challenge 2 is now out in Japan! Copies can be imported or acquired through *ahem* other means. I already have my copy, and it's just as awesome as the first game is. Here's hoping the second one gets translated, too, and that this one doesn't take two years to do so. Very Happy

I'll just wait for the translation. I like figuring out what to do with the magazines.
