I think that if people don't start getting money that means they can't pay there service providers and then they have to disconnect their servers.

It's not a matter of people paying for the service, many people will go out of their way to pay for the internet. What will cause the end of the internet is the way the services want to charge you. For one, they are making bandwidth caps, if you use so much then you are screwed for the month. Also, they are planning on making you pay to get access to only the most popular sites, like Myspace and Youtube. You will have to pay them to go on other sites not included with the service.

To avoid this, you should fight for Net Neutrality

The internet will not end, but God willing, some big sites will go under. Hopefully IGN and Gamedaily. More traffic for me!

Thanks for unlocking this thread.

I wish somebody else here would take this more seriously. The internet may not collapse, but it may become corporate. Then sites like this will die.

I don't think that's realistic. But large sites like YouTube could become unsustainable. Sites like YouTube, 1UP.com, IGN, and GameFAQs are sustainable primarily if not entirely through ad revenue. With the economy stagnation showing no signs of relenting, companies will cut internet advertising expenditures, opting instead for viral campaigns. This will cut the revenues of such sites. At the same time, website server host sites will be forced to raise hosting prices to keep afloat, thus causing big sites to have a significantly higher overhead.

I never understood banner ads, who the fuck is actually intrigued enough by them to click them and check them out? Maybe I'm a bit old school but I remember when the internet was RIFE with spammy obnoxious fucking useless banner ads and pop ups, and learned early on to disregard them. Confused

Thanks syd I really wanted to have a discussion

Any way hosting sites does cost money. Granted it costs less to host a site on your own server. But bandwidth also costs money and when the prices rise poeple will end up changing their service plan lowering the amount of bandwidth they have. Or they can do they alternative and put some adds on their website

How much revenue do ads really generate? I've always ignored them. Am I rare in that? Confused

Some ads are paid for straight up, not in terms of clicks.

Like when MKvDCU comes out and suddenly you have to click past an ad for it to get to IGN, IGN is making money off that hijack whether you click it or not.

Yup. They know that most people don't click on them anymore, but people still SEE the ad, which is really prime function of ads to begin with, to touch one of the senses and implant the idea of a certain service or product, even at a subconscious level. It's really quite dirty.

I am not in the mood to write a lot, so I'll write as little as I can and still make some points.

ISPs are trying to create internet packages. They want to charge based on the content you want to see. You can buy the "basic package" with Google and CNN.com, the advanced package with Yahoo!, MSN, and Wikipedia, or the unlimited package with Sydlexia.com.

Thank god for Google. They own so much infrastructure that they might be able to actually create a second set of hard lines and keep the big ISPs legit. Also the US government is looking into free wireless internet access for 95% of Americans in 10 years. While this isn't a promise, it is something that is being seriously looked into.

None of this will matter because 2012 is just around the corner.
