So I was just thinking about the differences between the two versions. Obviously the SNES version wasn't the complete translation so the story wasn't as quite in depth, but on the other hand from what I've heard the GBA version has atrocious music compared to the original. These are just two discrepancies off the top of my head.
Overall in your mind, which is the better version of the game?

I don't think I've ever listened to the music on a portable game. I normally play them with the sound turned all the way down.

Without question, the GBA version is better.
A much better translation, some extra stuff, and I never noticed the music being that much worse.

The DS game is FF4. JRA is talking about FF6.
And honestly, I like FF4 better on the GBA than the DS.

Is this coming from the guy who encourages other people not to listen to other music while playing video games because video game music is designed to "enhance the experience?"

OK, that's why I hate roman numerals, except if it's comedically done like FFXIXIIIMMCIV.
But if we're talking FF6, well, I'd go with the GBA version of that too.

I prefer the PSX version. It's under its true number, the graphics went unchanged in the porting and it's got an FMV intro and outro. Same deal with FF4.

It also came with ungodly load times, a bestiary and other extras. I love waiting for my SNES games to load.

Why NOT go for the remake?

I have both of these, and I say FFVI, hands down. I don't know where you heard that the GBA version has atrocious music, but it sounds essentially the same. And FFIII is tooooooo sloooooowww...and basically a FFV Lite.

For the first time through, I'd recommend FF6 on the SNES. Yeah, the translation's crap, but the superior music quality is the best way to get drawn into the story for the first time. Otherwise, I'd say play it on the GBA, because the writing is better with the added benefit of character's faces in dialogue boxes (Yes that is a big thing for me).

Ugh. Ok, by FFIII, I mean the Super Nintendo version of 6. For fucks sake people, can't you read polls?

Wait...they're gonna make a DS version?
Maybe they could get Mark Hamill to do Kefka, seeing as how he's constantly compared to the Joker.

I've been holding my breath on FFVI until they make a DS version. It warms my heart to see even rumors about it finally happening.

Yes, but I normally play portables on the go, and I feel like a douchebag if I have the sound on. And neither my SP or original model DS have headphone jacks.

Hmmm... I didn't think it did. At any rate, the only headphones I own are some bitchin' giant noise-cancelling ones, and I'm not using those with it and I'm not buying new ones. Besides, you look like a tool with headphones plugged into your game system.
As for FF6.DS, they've still gotta do FF5.DS

I didn't realize the translation for FF6 was considered so bad. Was it improved at all for Anthology? I originally played it on the SNES, but so much time has passed since I've played it on anything other than Anthology that I never noticed the difference.

It was much better. Anthology used the same translation as the SNES version. This one is newly translated. Granted, the original translation wasn't as abysmal as Final Fantasy IV's was, but there were some things.
Two examples leap out at me. The first is when Edgar and Terra meet, and Edgar tries putting the moves on her. Terra seems confused, Edgar is dejected. I can't remember the exact text, but the old translation implies Terra feels a "normal" girl would have been moved by Edgar's cheesy lines (I doubt it). The new translation make it a lot clearer that Terra's not moved by his lines because she cannot feel love. Pretty significant.
Another one is when Sabin joins. In the old translation, Terra comments that she thought Sabin was a "bodybuilder who strayed from his gym". Odd, anachronistic, but not bad. In the new translation, however, Terra comments she thought he was "One of Vargas's bears that escaped". Not too much funnier, but it does put Sabin's comment about a "Bear like him" joining in some actual context.
And then there's Relm. Oh, Lord, there's Relm.
