I hope this doesn't make me look like a noob. Everywhere I go I see Super Nintendos like this:
Were they a special kind of SNES back in the day? Or are they like the FC consoles being made today? It seems to take a different cart than normal ones.
I grew up with this kind:
So that's why I'm confused.

I think the one on top is the Japanese version.

I haven't seen the top one anywhere in any store I've ever gone into. I grew up, and still play, the 2nd one.
The top one was a 2nd editon one, that I believe was mostly sold in Toys R Us durring the tail end of the SNES's lifespan.
It was smaller, lighter, and probably cheaper to make then the original style.
It's basically the SNES version of this:

Shit. My mistake.
The one in your pic is the UK version of the SNES. Which is almost idectical to the Japanese model. (Slighly different color sceme, and the Japanese one says "Super Famicon".)

A friend of mine had the Second Edition, and I was like "whaaat?". I've always wanted one of the PAL controllers, myself. Not enough to buy one online, but if I ever saw it in the local game shop I'd grab it.
