I have Firefox version 3.0.5. Is there any way to block ads on certain websites of my choice?

Adblock Plus. The only thing that the internal list won't get is things that are extremely recent, and you can always block those yourself. Hell, you can block almost anything yourself.

Look into the NoScript add-on.

Lots of updates, but awesome, only sites you approve are seen.
