I gotta say it's one word. Since I use it as a descriptive term, much like asshole or shithead. However I can see how one might look at it like Ass Clown, a term in 2 words.

"Douchebag" auto-wins for flowing better than "Douche Bag".
We don't always have to conform to another person's way of spelling. Just like I say Megaman and not Mega Man. It just sounds.. rough.

"Douche" is a word by itself, means something that has something to do with sex or whatever, I don't know it's exact meaning. By that logic I'd say "bag" could go at the end with a space and make sense. It just wouldn't make sense in the way we think it does. Where "douche" is describing "bag", like "yellow submarine".
As a compound word I think the meaning is there, "Douchebag".

I prefer "douchebag" as a idiomatic, non-disheveled portmanteau representing a person with little empathy or even general references of being someone I don't prefer (or maybe you're a McCallister), leaving the spaced phrase "douche bag" for the literal object.

I've actually thought about this. See, are a "douche" and a "douche bag" two different things? Does the "bag" make it a different noun than just "douche"? If not, then "douche" is basically a shortened version of "douchebag", so there's your answer.
