It's 4:55AM EST. In a little over an hour, I will be playing ice hockey again for the first time in almost five years. Seems sort of inconsequential, but for me, it's a pretty huge deal. I've been wanting to get back on the ice for a loooooong time. It's weird as hell... I'm actually as nervous as I was the first time I ever played.

Anybody ever given something up for a long period of time then picked it back up again?

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

I gave up guitar for 6 months when I was younger. It's been like 5 years now and I'm miles beyond where I ever hoped to be.

Good luck to you Kubo, just hum the (former) theme from 'Hockey Night In Canada', or the 'Blades of Steel' theme if you prefer, and hit the ice skatin'

And hit those fuckers hard. Break glass if you gotta. Do it.

Does anybody here have a Ross Rifle?

I moved back to CT after 5 years of living in MA.

Trust me... it is a big deal.

People pronounce their R's here.

Bummer update: When I got to the rink (30 mins away), they already had four goalies (all of which were aged 40 or over... GD old guys). In most open hockey situations, the rink stops allowing goalies to play after there are already four. As such, my re-indoctrination into playing will be put on hold for a week. I'm far too amped to put it off any longer. Once I get back to school, I'll play at our team's rink.

The last time I played ice hockey was in 1996. I usually played LW or RW.

I think I'll be just fine if I never play again. I love the sport, I can't stand the majority of other people who play it.

Without making this too much of a sports-related thread, let me say that I agree with you. There are generally two types of people that play ice hockey: (1) those that understand the finer points of the game like playing positionally, the beauty of a fast breakout, and the flow associated with a well-designed play, and (2) those that think hockey should be all about putting your head down, stick handling, and fighting.

Typically, most people I've played with have fallen into category 1. Unfortunately, at any open hockey, you're going to run into a hell of a lot of category 2s. They're the ones playing without shoulder pads and hovering around the attack zone blue line the entire game.

There are three types of hockey players:

Fat Guys - good shooting control and very hard to knock down, but slow
Skinny Guys - poor shooting control and easy to knock down, but really fast
Average Guys - Average shooting control, average speed, can be knocked down sometimes

That is the three types of bad guys. Big guys who do damage and take a lot of hits but are slow, fast guys you can't hit but don't do much damage. and average (boring) guys.

I mean, these are very general guidelines that could apply to multiple mediums.

It is always hard to play against a team of all fat guys.

They just bounce you around.
