Since the early '90s, those of us who still have an NES have had to worry every microinstant that we've somehow gotten it to work properly that something, ANYTHING, is going to fuck up. Maybe the graphics will glitch up in some way. Maybe the game will freeze. Maybe the console will spontaneously reset. Maybe any combination of the three. I've been putting myself through such worry and, oftentimes, grief for so long now and I'm so very, very sick of it. Does anyone know of any way to restore the console to its pristine condition from back in the '80s, when we never had to worry about any such things?

Get a new 72 pin connector off of ebay. If you can find a gold plated one, get it. I think those are higher quality. That's what I've heard revives the NES. Otherwise, buy a toploader... Otherwise there's the NES knock-offs like the FC Twin...

My TV was as shitty as my Nes, so I often had to tweak with both of them. The TV would be ok as long as it stopped scrolling all the time, but for the Nes I had to blow the cartridge and figure out if the system wanted it pushed down or not.
Also the games sometimes started at 3x normal speed or something, but that was mostly hilarious.

If you don't want to order a connector off the internet, just pop open your nintendo and remove yours and clean it with some industrial cleaner. I used to do these types of things for a living not to long ago. Just spray some cleaner on it set it down so it air drys. Apply some more, scrub it and then let it dry again. It should be back to like new status. Unless the corrosion sets in. One takes 5-7 days the other takes about an hour. Your choice.

The only game that fucks up continually in my collection is Q*Bert and Donkey Kong Classics. Other than that, the other 40 or so games work fine still, since like '89. I'm not bragging, more like amazed.

Gold plated cables/leads = stupid. Gold conducts electricity MUCH worse than copper (I'd have to look up the resistance of each metal to refresh my memory, but I believe it's several thousand times worse than copper) and they're needlessly expensive. The advantage to gold is that it won't corrode over time, but your cables would have to be really old for that to happen anyway and you can just buy another one if it does (The price of 2 normal ones should still be significantly less than the single gold one.)

Or you could get a new 72 pin connector, gut your nes, and make a custom case that's bitchin' as all hell.

My NES is fairly shot; after about 10 minutes of fiddling and asking it nicely, then it MIGHT work, if it's in the mood. Makes me glad that emulation and the Virtual Console exist.
I'm looking to buy a toploader though maybe. They're not that hideously expensive.
