im setting this up now, since im sure it will come up eventually, but i wont have the opportunity later on since i'll be working and then travelling after work.

so its a preemptive new years thread. so, if i dont have a chance later, then i'll say it now: HAPPY NEW YEAR.

(i know theres a chinese new year and i think a jewish new year [rosh hashana or yom kippur or something] so i apologize if this thread doesnt apply to you)

Happy new year! I'm not doing anything exciting.....just the GF and me hanging with a few other couples, ordering pizza and playing Wii.

I find that I feel too old for some kind of crazy open-bar party. That stuff is just too loud and crowded for me anymore.

Christ, Ice, your new year's eve sounds way more exciting than mine'll be. Cleaning out the old apartment, going home to do some writing with my wife, playing with the cats and chihuahua. She doesn't drink, and I don't like to drink alone, nor do I like being harried by the Gilbert PD, so I'm staying in tonight and staying sober too. My younger self would smack the crap out of me now, but it's going to be relaxing, at least.

Who likes role-playing games? Me. Way too goddamn much.

I'm going to a kegger at a friend's house tonight (bringing some weed too), and I'm getting super fucked up.

None of you probably realize this, but this won't just be a new year or even a new decade; it'll be a new 30-year cycle of whole new trends subtly merging into one another. The trends from 1980 to 2009 were wildly divergent from the trends from 1950 to 1979, themselves as such from those from 1920 to 1949, and so on.

Examples?

That theory is dumb. Every decade evolves upon the one just before it, grouping them into thirties is stupid. The '70s, for example, had a /hell/ of a lot more in common with the '60s and '80s than with the '50s.

Decades are overrated, anyway. More often than not, trends and the like break up more evenly if you start halfway into the decade. Like, "Late '60s, early '70s," or "Late '80s, early '90s"

Yea I didn't really get the 30-year thing.

And it's true that culturally, decades tend to "turn over" 2-3 years after the chronological decade turnover. If you look at movies from 1992 or 1993, a lot of the styles/clothes and stuff still look pretty 80's. Essentially, the decade is just an arbitrary reference point.

I am possibly going to a friend's house party, possibly staying in. I'm still getting over a cold, so I can't drink, and being in a crowded house probably isn't the best idea. I forced myself to go out last night, I was coughing the whole time we were at On The Border. So I'm thinking going out, maybe not a smart move.

But we'll see, I guess.

Lord of the Rings Marathon. Followed by the Star Wars trilogy.
Maybe even the prequels if I get drunk enough.

Happy New Years!

No plans for me really. My main goal is to try and sleep during all the fireworks that will be going off around my neighborhood. I'm not looking forward to it especially since they go till around 2.

I'm spending the night with an annoying bitch and a crying baby. Responsibility is awesome!

I'm just gonna eat a bunch of sleeping pills and see how many episodes of Iron Chef I can watch before I pass out. Wish me luck!

The question is...what are you going to call the new decade?

Is it:

Two-thousand and ten

or

Twenty ten?

Twenty ten sounds better in my opinion.

Well, two-thousand and nine is what I called the last year; I guess the logical thing would be to call it two thousand and ten.

However, I do like twenty ten just because its easier to say. I may use that once in a while for conveniences' sake.
