That was MK3, and UMK3 as well. But I believe there were different levels you could do it in each game. You could definitely do it the subway level.

umm.... That's mortal Kombat III. I'm not sure, but I think Syd might of said something like this in his MK fatalities article. But since MKIII they have done it for every MK game since.
EDIT: beat me to9 it... you could do it in the catacombs and youd end up i think in either a prison or throne area. same with an office to the roof outside the portal.

MK4 didn't have anything like that, and I don't think Deadly Alliance did either. But Deception and Armageddon both had multi-tiered levels.

I'm pretty sure the Deadly Alliance game had something close to it, since the PSP port had you punch people through walls. But they might have altered the PSP version since it came out after Deadly Alliance. For some reason I thought MK4 did, guess I haven't played it much.

I remember in SNES MK3, this feature would usually result in the level circulation consisting of the same 3 or 4 levels because when you upercutted your opponent to another level, it only took you back a couple in the rotation.

Yeah, in the SNES version (which is, IMO, the best home version I've tried) it works on every level, but you can do it once per fight and the second round is played on the new level.
That being said, I'm going to play some MK3 now.

I never understood the Toasty! thing. I always thought he said whoopsie, but as a child my friends would always argue me over that. Can someone please elaborate this?

It does sound like "Whoopsie!" but I'm almost positive it's "Toasty!"
I've read something about this before, I think the guy is someone who worked on the game. And he yells toasty whenever something violent happens.

There he is. He was the sound guy. He yells when you do a chain of combos or some shit.

If that was the case, the MK soundtrack would be nothing but Forden yelling "Toasty!" every time a move landed.
Also, in MKII (I think it was), if Forden popped up on the screen and you pressed a certain button combination before he disappeared, you got taken away to fight a secret character (Noob Saibot?)

Down + Start at the Portal.
I could never play any of the 2D MKs after MKI because Forden popping out of the corner would always freak me out when I was younger.
There's a cheat on the Genesis that turns Forden into a drawing of a pizza, which is even freakier.

I played MK1 for like 6 hours on MAME one day trying to get Reptile to appear, and he wouldn't. I couldn't get shadows to appear across the moon, and I couldn't even get him to drop down before a match and give me a hint on how to fight him.
AND I WAS PLAYING THE FINAL FUCKING OFFICAL REVISION!

MK III/UMK III was the last one I played with multi-tier levels. MK4 in my opinion was a huge step back from III. I loved the first three because of all the hidden stuff while in 4 they took out the Friendships and Babalities which were one of my favorite things to do. Speaking of MK one of my fondest arcade memories was doing Kano's heart rip fatality completely by accident. Also seeing the MK2 arcade game for the first time. My friend and myself were like "Holy shit...MK2!"

MK lost its roots. It's main pull was real actors playing the characters and not animated sprites like Street Fighter was doing and other emerging fighting games like Samurai Showdown.
I still want an old game like that back, with a good Johnny Cage and hot as hell Kitana

I actually ended up liking MK VS DC but still not as much as the originals. Maybe I liked MK VS DC because my expectations were so low for the game and it was better than I thought it would be.

MK is all still done with motion capture. Many of the same people who worked on MK3 still do mo-cap work for Midway. That's why Mokap was a secret guy in Deadly Alliance.

I thought his first appearance was in Armageddon. How do you unlock him?

Successfully complete all missions in Konquest mode for all fighters. Then, highlight Cyrax at the character selection screen and hold Down and hit Start. This works in the GCN and XBox versions. On the PS2 version, use X instead of Start.
You can also play as Blaze, the end boss from Armageddon. To play as Blaze, successfully complete all missions in Konquest mode for all fighters. Then, highlight Raiden at the character selection screen and hold Down and hit Start. This works in the GCN and XBox versions. On the PS2 version, use X instead of Start.

So the only ones making their first appearances in Armageddon are Taven and Daegon. Whatever.
