Weird problem with SNES emulators

I've noticed a weird problem with SNES emulators. I use the keyboard for controls, and neither BSNES, ZSNES, or SNES9X can detect multiple buttons being pushed at once. So if a game has a code that requires multiple buttons to be pushed at once, or a move that requires you to hold one button while pressing others, it can't be done. Can anybody recommend an emulator that doesn't suffer from this problem, or a work around?

I had three MS Sidewinders break on me between 1999 and 2002. I am never buying a PC controller again.

PC controllers are made of such cheap crap.

Syd, I'm thinking about getting a USB adapter to hook up a real SNES controller.

Also I'm not sure what is up with your keypressing situation, but I can definitely tell you that most keyboards only allow for 3 keys to be pressed at a time. So if you were pressing up + left & then A + B you would get an error on 99% of PC keyboards.

Gaming keyboards usually are allowed to have more keypresses.

Yeah buy a USB adapter for an SNES controller. Most PC controllers are horrible.

I have a Logitech Precision which is basically a cheap-looking USB Playstation controller. I've punished it viciously through the years and it seems to be pretty indestructible. You can get them for like 10 bucks. Worth it, IMO.

Okay, now for an actual solution:

Go to the config screen and set multiple button to the same input.

For example, if it needed Up+A+B, set A and B to the same key.

Syd & I discussed that Usa, but the problem lies with the amount of different combinations you can make. Plus if you set all those buttons to one key and your playing <insert random game> any time you press up or a or b your going to get that combination. Passwords though yea it works. Syd just needs to get a controller case closed. A USB connector or a next gen system controller are good calls.

That solution only works if the code is something like "Hold A,B, X, and the press Start", because assigning all the buttons to the same key makes the game think that all four were pressed simulatenously. But if the code is something like "While holding B, press X, Y, Y, X, Start" that method won't work.

I should probably just get the USB adapter. I'm also intrigued by these "gaming keyboards" that GPF mentioned. That would actually be preferrable, because it's easier to repeatedly hit the screenshot button on the emulator when you're using the keyboard. Anyone know what he's talking about?

I know what I'm talking about!

LOL

Ok, so here is the USB device that I am thinking of getting for a SNES controller.

As for the gaming keyboards, I am pretty sure that the Logitec G15 keyboard is capable of unlimited button presses. I'm going to get some better info and will post it here asap.

Man, I so want one of those retro usb things. I think I heard Ghandi's getting one..... I want one too! It's too bad that there's not a SNES/NES combo one though.... Plus they're OS X compatible!! The PSX N64 adapter looks sweet too.

Also, are these marketplaces reliable? I've never bought one before. Also if you're handy with electronics and solder you can make your own.... I'll find links if anyone's interested.

Syd, why don't you use a 360 controller if you have one? If you don't like the design of it then, well, I understand. I've used the same Gravis GamePad Pro USB for the past 8 years or so and it hasn't failed me. I had a cheap dual analog usb shit out on me before that one. I've been through more DualShock controllers than USB gamepads...

One more thing, do these adapters allow for the use of a turbo controller? I mean, will the turbo on my NES Advantage the same way it works on my NES?

http://www.abs.com/app/Keyboard_M1_details.asp - can have 6 keys pressed at once. Is very expensive.

It's $70, free shipping, and there's a $25 off holiday coupon. So it's $45 plus tax, which isn't bad. I'm tempted to buy it, but it doesn't have a volume toggle. I don't know if I can tolerate a keyboard that lacks volume controls.

Word on the street, ok... in the geek forums, is that the Logitech G15 can handle at least 5 keypresses.

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/3498&cl=US,EN

This was tested by an owner who claims they never had the need to press more than 5 at a time.

I have definitely heard a lot of people who like this keyboard.

My friend has something like the G15, only older. I couldn't really tell you anything else other that it was badass, and this G15 looks stellar.

I got another few recommendations for the G15.

It seems like a lot of people like it.

I have one word of warning about Logitech. They make good, easy to use, fun products. They don't necessarily focus on quality. Expect to get a year or two out of it, based on my past experiences with their keyboards.

Granted, I type a lot, but if you live around your computer like I do, you will eventually kill it. Some of the other keyboards are virtually indestructible.

You're certainly not the first person I've heard say that about Logitech. I've used a number of their products for years and I've never hit a hitch. Especially that gamepad I posted about earlier. I love that thing and have sent it flying into walls, bashed it on the desk, etc etc. It doesn't have a scratch and I got it for $5. I love their mouses too.

I've never had a PC controller work right for me so I stay away from them as well.

But playing NES/SNES games with a keyboard is ghetto and lame.

So I use a Logic3 Playstation to PC USB Converter and a PS2 controller which works just as well as a SNES controller (similar button layout). I'd give a link to it, but it seems to be only sold in the UK. It was only like $10 though and works a treat if you can find it in the US.

I've had this bad boy for about 5 years now, and works like a champ. It's like $30 bucks and takes rechargable batteries. Not that it really matters, but It works from opposite corners of my house, so reception isn't an issue.

ASLO, Sidewinders are shit. Don't let your opinion on PC controllers be based off of those. The only thing that kicked ass about the Sidewinder is it had 6 buttons on the front instead of 4, making the Street Fighter series, especially the first MvC, much easier for combo's etc because it was laid out like the arcade machines.

EDIT EDIT: Also it has a nifty hat switch for emulators, so you can use the d-pad or thumbstick. of course, unless your using a n64 emulator, your going to want to use the d-pad.

Dances with Wolves 2 is gonna ROCK!
