My wife and I have shared a car for the last 6 years. It has been frigg'n awesome not needing to pay for two.
But now the time has come. In the next month I must buy a car.
All I will use this car for is to go from my house to my job. Right now that is 6 miles each way. It may eventually become 15 miles each way. Total trip time will never be more than 20 minutes.
We agreed to keep one nicer car (the one we already have) and then have one to just get to and from work. On the weekends it will sit. On the weekdays, it will serve only to transport to and from work.
So... I want to spend as little as possible but I want something new.
I have been thinking about a Honda Fit, or something like that.
Thoughts? Recommendations?
Gimmie details!

Get a Geo Metro/Suzuki Swift. Excellent gas mileage at a minimal cost. Around 35 mpg avg. Oh shit, you said new. Get a smart car then. I think they sell them in the US. Oh, you said inexpensive too, then yeah, get the Fit.

get a Vespa. Honda has some neat cheaper scooters too. In two months my car is paid off, and best believe I'll be getting one. Not that it matters for you, but it's a great conversation piece for the ladies as well.

Suzuki Aerio
My brother is on his second and loves it. Also, you can get one used, they were made up till 2007, but only since 2001. It works well I think as well because you can buy used, but it won't be that old though.
Chevrolet Aveo
Is still being made, has been around since 2003. Great on gas, and quite small, but would serve the purpose.
Scion xB
Tons of room for a small vehicle. Gets great gas mileage. A buddy of mine drives 60 miles or more to work everyday, and then law school at night and loves it. Also, has a kid and works great in the backseat for the car seat. Another bonus, been around since 2004 so many used, but not that old.

I know, getting something that smokes anything on fuel efficiency (a finite resource) for short distance trips is fucking lame isn't it?

Honda Civic has great mileage.
A scooter might be a good idea; I hear Honda makes some good ones. Vespas can be expensive comparatively.

Ok, some additional requirements, since apparently the word CAR didn't stand out enough.
The vehicle must have doors. That's right... more than one.
The vehicle must also have a heater so that when it snows (and it will) I don't have to freeze my ass off. Windshield wipers are a must, and a roof is required. Rain bothers me too. Also, electric windows and power locks are required. And a CD player. I'm so needy.
I need to get to and from work every day. Including days where I might not want to go.
I like some of the suggestions I have heard. I have a Civic and love it, but they are actually a little on the expensive side now. I have the 2007 EX with Nav.

My apologies. I will be sure to follow your guidelines, and not offer up any suggestions that may be a decent alternative, weighing out the pro's and cons of each solution. But hey, I would like to thank you for not being an ass about it, and realizing that I was just trying to be helpful.

Blackout,
Before Syd sees that and has a shit fit (and he will with it being that wide), copy this code and replace your image post with it.
| Code: |

It will make your image look like this:

Question for you GP. I did not include any sort of SUV's in my list, thinking you were only looking for a small car after mentioning the Fit. Would you like any recommendations on a small SUV?

Only if the cost isn't high.
Most of the time an SUV has a higher total cost of ownership, both in initial price and upkeep.

yeah, that fucking pic was ridiculously huge.
anyhow, if work is only 6 miles away, just get a bike and ride there. or take the bus and ride your bike back.
then again, it doesnt get that cold here in az, so a car probably would be necessary once temperature drops to the zeroes

If you were to go with an SUV and wanted to save money I have 2 options for you.
Subaru Forrester
Great on gas mileage, good power, and always high ratings across the board including both nhtsa and iihs for crash test ratings.
Honda CRV
As pictured above. Not a huge fav of mine because I'm not a big Honda fan, but you get a pretty good bang for your buck with it.

Today I saw a guy riding a motor scooter. It is 40 degrees out and raining pretty badly. To me... that would pretty much wreck the day.
If it were snowing there is just no way to control a 2 wheeled vehicle of any type.

I would look at a Scion. They're made by Toyota, so you know it's a quality car.

Any particular reason?
I know nothing about them... but if you have been in one, what did you like about it?

Never driven one, but I remember seeing good reviews for them on Consumer Reports, and Toyota obviously is a quality brand.
Plus, I think the Scion TC looks pretty cool:

Scion tC is incredibly small. I'm a big guy I admit, but literally in my buddy Ellis's tC in the front passenger seat my knees were not only in my chest, but came above the dashboard. Any front end crash and I would have lost my legs. Also, even in the driver seat, without the sunroof open, my head did not fit.
I am a big propenant of the xB as I stated before for room, gas mileage, dependability etc. The xD is good too, but too new for consideration for saving money on a used car.

Whereas I like the look of the Corolla S, that's all it is, look. It's only difference is the exterior styling, there is no advantage in terms of power or options, it's just an external styling package. I am a fan of the 8th Gen (E110 series) and 9th Gen (E120 and E130) Corolla's. I like the newer ones as well, but the current Generation of Corolla came out end of 2006. I am thinking they may still be a bit pricier. If you can get one with the 1.6L I4 and the AWD you would be set.

GP, are you looking for more room, more power, or more fuel mileage? More of everything? What price range are we looking at?
