We've all done this. There's that one challenge in a game that you just can't seem to pull off, and then suddenly you somehow pull it off. Here are a couple of mine.

Goldeneye - That goddam Invincibility cheat. I spent hours trying to beat the Facility in under 2:05, and every time I'd either fuck up or Dr. Doak wouldn't be where he was supposed to be. The time I finally did it, I accidentally detonated a remote mine too early and took off most of my health. The whole time I was playing through that run, I knew I should just abort and try again, because there was no way I was going to survive. But somehow, I did.

Soul Calibur - In Mission Mode, one of the extra missions requires you to beat three guys, and nothing but throws and unblockable moves will damage them. These guys are fighting back viciously too, which makes it hard to nail them with these moves. I couldn't do it with my favorite character, Sophitia, so I decided to try Yoshimitsu. I got in some good throws on the first two guys and barely beat them. The third guy comes out, and he just kicks the hell out of me. I get in one throw, but it's apparent I'm going to lose. Then I accidentally go into Yoshi's super slow super powerful unblockable sword poke. And the guy just sits there and eats it. I win!

Yep, Perfect Dark on N64.

It was such an ungodly bitch to get a gold in the shooting range for all of the guns and weapons.

I was stuck on the Superdragon forever, and one morning it just clicked for me.

I don't know for sure, but I think there have been a few fighters where I was taken down to 1 HP before I got a hit in and still won. Oh, and I died on Ganon in Twilight Princess, restarted with only 3 hearts, and beat him with about 2 and a quarter.

Probably numerous times in fighting games where I got my ass kicked and then somehow pulled an upset.

F-Zero GX: Emerald Cup on master difficulty. My machine broke down inches from the finish line, but it still passed it and I technically finished the race. I got first overall in the Grand Prix, and, after racing Diamond on master, I unlocked the GX/AX tracks.

I never got through the story mode, however. The entire game was unbelievably difficult (especially for a racer), but the story mode crossed the line.

Still, 'twas a beautiful game and one of Gamecube's best.

Donkey Kong 64: Those fucking awful missions where you have to beat that fucktarded caterpillar down a slide.

I remember 100 coins for Tick Tock Clock in Super Mario 64 was hard as hell too.

The invinciblity code in Goldeneye was hard to unlock, but not nearly as hard as protecting Natalya from dying in the Control center, not even Game Shark could help me with that.

There are a lot of what if's in life Donny. What if I hit you really hard in the face, knocked yo shit to the back of yo skull? What if I....had you girl gargle my nuts? The fact remains, you are a fuckin mutant.

Super Mario Galaxy's later Purple Coin Runs. Some of the coin runs require you to just get lucky.

A nightmarish challange I put myself through was beating Mega Man X5 with X without getting any boss weapons, armors, health power ups, and energy tanks. It took a lot of hours because Sigma basically killed you in 2 hits and you couldn't save at Sigma's stage without having to fight all the other bosses again.

Another one was the Leech game in RE Zero. I had gotten the last leech and I was as far from the exit as you could be with no health items or ammo on critical. Luckily I managed to dodge EVERYTHING on the way back and made it. I did get attacked by a hunter which I thought for sure was the end of me but I was still alive.

Metal Gear Solid 4's Assaisin's Creed Emblem: I had gotten exactly the same amount of alerts, Knife Kills and CQC holds before I finished the game.
Project Torque: The 2nd liscense Challenge, I completed with .111 seconds left
Armored Core The Last Raven: Fighting that giant boss and winning with only 50 AP left.

All those times I beat Akuma in Street Fighter III, most notably as Hugo.

Ahhh the Invincibility from Goldeneye was so tedious to get. I remember sitting and swearing at Doctor Doak every time I would fail - whether he showed up or not.

One for me that stands out was (even though I'm not a big fan of the game) in Final Fantasy X dodging 200 lightning bolts to get Lulu's best item. Took far too long and was an epic waste of my time.
Also, soloing Lavos in Chrono Trigger with just Crono. Took I think 2 new game+'s for me to be able to do.

Chapter 7 was bullshit and made me want to kill things, but eventually I pulled it off. Fucking Black Shadow and Blood Falcon. But yeah it was a fantastic game, probably my favorite GCN game.

I never had much trouble with the Purple Coins, save the one where you have to use the pull-stars in the Ghostly Galaxy. That was bullshit.

The stars where you have to use the Wiimote to control that bubble were hard though, one of them took me like 20 tries.

I was playing in a friendly 8 player Soul Calibur 2 tournament at a game shop. We used the default tourney mode. I was Astaroth and the last team member. With only 1 opponent down and 3 to go I was up. I also was down to one loss ending it for us. My opponent, now I forget who they were playing, hit me with a Super Move that hit incredibly hard and I was sure it was over. All my life gone.

When Astaroth stood back up.

"OMG I'm ALIVE!" I kept shouting.

I somehow turned it around and beat him. And then beat the remaining team members. Crazy comeback.

Did this one as well, didn't take me quite so long to do once I figured the rhythm. I never got Kimahri or Tidus' weapons.

This is a great topic, however i have trouble recalling any specific situations, though it happens to me so often. I would have to say that most of the time it's beating a final boss on a fighting game that I am new to, and haven't figured out the pattern in which they combat you. I remember Bison ripping me a new one over and over when i first got to him, then pulling off some miraculous bullshit to beat him. Also the final boss on the first Ninja Gaiden. I remember the first time I beat him getting so lucky, because it was before I figured out which weapon was best against him, and not knowing he had 3 incarnations.

Especially the one in like, Spooky something galaxy or whatever, where there's just a bunch of pull stars. Also in that galaxy, BOULDERGEIST.

Yea, it was something like that. It was just so fucking tedious because there were never really any large groups of coins in the level, you really had to gather them one at a time.

Man this one time I was playing Madden 07 and it was fourth and 12 from my own 10 yard line. Six seconds left on the clock, down by 4 I dropped back with Jay Cutler, scrambled out of the pocket....oops, wrong site.

I never did get invincibility on Goldeneye, but I did get it on Perfect Dark. I was so happy I took several pictures of the screen. This was before digital cameras, too, so actual tangible pictures that someone had to process at a lab. I wonder what they thought when they saw it come out.

There have been a few times when my brother and I were playing some game, and we would be taking turns playing. He'd be stuck, and I'd timidly ask for a shot knowing I'd lose just as badly, and I finally win the damn thing. Hulk: Ultimate Destruction had this a few times. There was this mission where Hulk and some important item are under this shield, and the four generators are outside the shield, meaning you have to throw the mech dudes they send to fight you at the generators to destroy it. It was infuriating because they'd send the bastards eight at a time, meaning once you actually picked one up, three more would walk over and kick you in the crotch so you'd drop him.

Currently working on trying to beat every boss in Order of Ecclesia without taking a hit (you get a useless medallion with the boss' name on it each time you do this). I hate the Lighthouse crab boss (you can see it in the trailer).

The bank job (can't remember the mission name) on GTA IV. I pretty much did the whole thing with my energy in the red, then I fucked up the getaway and had to switch getaway cars twice. My heart was beating like I was really in a shootout/high speed chase.

I beat the Castle of Dragon challenge, and the entire game looks like it was pulled out of an ass.

Does that count?
