Two subject thread, cause they're both related. (slightly)

First is I just picked up my preorder for the title game. I've only logged in 4 hours so far, but my expectations, my experience, and come to find out the consensus as far as reviews are concerned are aligned; Atlus made a few gameplay tweaks, a stronger story, and addressed the minor problems to turn the sequel into pure gold with minimum effort. Its no persona 4, but its damn nifty. If you didn't play the first one, its about a young detective in 1920s japan who deals with mysteries involving the spirit world. You negotiate with demons to get them on your side, where they help you in battle and in investigation. Its an action RPG, so you fight alongside them, with sword and gun. I highly recommend it.

The second is that this is probably my last PS2 game, partly cause this was the last PS2 game that isn't a sports or movie game coming out. The other dealbreaker was Brutal Legend, which I have to have. I'm getting a 360, and trying to draw up a list of games I want on it, but I'm not pleased so far.

1.Brutal legend
2.Resident Evil 5
3.Infamous
4.Batman Arkham Asylum

The rest I don't feel strongly about. When I got the ps2, it had a vast vast library to go through, something new in just about every genre was buried in there somwhere. A real jack of all trades system, with a stronger emphasis on RPGs and not as strong on FPSs which is fine by me. For being around as long as it has, the 360 is not wowing me.

So, anything you would endorse?

The library for both the 360 and PS3 aren't as good as the PS2's, I'd rather save my money.

I enjoyed Dead Rising game when it came out for the 360. I wouldn't recommend it without a HDTV though. My brother played it on a standard television and you can't read the text half the time.

Sadly, not a lot of good RPGs come out these days, especially not in the US.

If you want diversity, I'd say get a Wii and a 360. The Wii has a lot of crap, but there's also a lot of random stuff that comes out that's pretty awesome, and certainly stuff that will appeal to the J-phile in you. Unfortunately, you can't get by with just a Wii. If you do, you'll miss out on major titles like Tekken, RE5, and Brutal Legend that the Wii, unfortunately, can't run.

I'm thinking of buying it, however I found the first one a little repititve. However I have to admit that the monster designs, the story, and the music were all first class. I'm probably going to end up buying this one as well. Did they do anything new with the combat or weapons system or did they leave it the same? It kind of irked me whenever I got the option to upgrade my katana only to see it's name change. As for the 360, I really don't know any good games to recommend. My brother has that system however it seems to me that the only games that really see attention on it are FPS.

I enjoyed the first Devil Summoner game. I'm looking forward to this one, but I might have to hold out for it again to see if it goes down in cash...

Combat is different
-Raidou has a dodge now
-He has two sword attacks, a basic combo and a MAG eating flurry that changes based on the sword type
-he can now have two demons out
-they teleport now, so more sluggish demons have an easier time with it
-he can also hide them, where they teleport to his side and become immune to damage
-MAG is recharged by hitting weak points then beating on the enemy, so ignoring weaknesses is not possible.

I forgot how the weapons changed from the first one, but the jist is you find steel which is used in forging your sword into new forms, with three types being blade type, spear type, and axe type. They are all swords, if that makes any sense.

I'm not happy with the current arrangement as far as systems. I don't want all of my money to go to buying two seperate systems just to get a reasonable fill. Ho hum.

The boss music is some of the best boss music ever.

Those all sound like reasonable improvements. I feel bad now thinking back to how I gave my copy away after I got bored with it. I was really close to the end too. Oh well, all of the improvements you've mentioned sound wonderful, I especially like the teleportation feature for the monster and the ability to have two out at a time as opposed to one. I actually expected the latter feature to be in the first one after I seen the intro. Oh well, this is going on my "to-buy" list. I just hope I can find another job soon. The music on the first game was really good as well. I thought the music really fit the imaginative setting. The only music I really didn't care for on the first one was the basic-boss music.

One more for you: The US release of Sakura Taisen in the fall, also for Wii. Wiki about it, you'll like it. It's basically 2 types of gameplay: Dating sim where you hang around with girls in the daytime, FFT/SRW-style SRPG ass-kicking with your army of steampunk mecha in the nighttime. And the girl you like the most gets the most stat boosts.

5.Street Fighter 4
6.King of Fighters XII
7.BlazBlue
8.Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2
9.Mass Effect
10.Fallout 3
11.Gears of War 1 and 2
12.Ninja Gaiden II
13.Tales of Vesperia
14.Dead Rising 1/(2 coming out later)
15.Lost Odyssey
16.Star Ocean: The Last Hope

Fixed... there's your starting list =p There's many more on the 360 (and many many more on XBLA), just look around. It has way more to offer than the PS3, at least.

I preordered this from Videogamesplus.ca as soon as I found out that it comes with the Raiho plushie. I can't resist such a tempting offer... of course, I have all the PS2 Shin Megami Tensei games that have come out so far, so I was gonna get this anyway sooner or later.

And Mr. Bomberman delivers once again, this time on two fronts. I've got a PS2 game to get, and a list of ten or greater games for the 360 to look ahead to. (Sorry, not all, no Fallout 3 or Dynasty warriors for me)

I think Infamous is only on the PS3.

You hurt my heart. As long as brutal legend gets on there, I'm okay.

I'l also hoping the SMT series doesn't end up exclusive.

Yea, Infamous is one of the few intriguing PS3 exclusives.

The 360 definitely seems to cater to the drab color palette shooters, but that seems to be the way of many next gen games.

As Bomberman said, there are gems but you just have to know where to look and be persistent

Also that list is definitely missing Bioshock. That game still remains to be one of the best games I have ever played. Granted its a shooter, but that is only on the surface (no pun intended). It has deeper RPG elements, and the ambiance and storytelling is unrivaled in the genre, or most any other for that matter.

I wouldn't recommend any next-gen gaming without an HDTV. Small blurry text being the chief reason. Hell, even some Wii games are hard to get through without a component hookup. It really makes all the difference.

I know this one kid who owns a PS3, but literally has it hooked up to a TV from like 92-94. Its such a shitfest that you cannot even tell the PS3 is capable of powerful visuals, its just sad.
