I'm usually fairly polite here, but dude that is the dumbest fucking thing in the world. What is your goal? And 50 dollars a month?? Jumping moses man, that is out of control. Now if you happen to be 475 pounds and are trying to become healthy, than I apologize but in any other case you are getting ripped off to the max. If you are a normal person just trying to gain muscle mass get some motivation and do push-ups, jumping jacks, jog, run in place, masturbate, anything but spend 50 dollars a month for a treadmill and a swimming pool. Fuck me running. Even a bowflex would be cheaper in the long run than that, and that's saying a lot because a bowflex is a rip off too.

He does have a point. Gyms are expensive and are worthless unless you have the motivation to workout constantly. And if you have that, might as well work out at home.
Unless you use it to scope out hotties at the pool. Then that's kinda lame too.

$50 /month is high, but not out of the question if you are comfortable working out.
If you will actually go. It is worth every penny.
Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise.

How could you be more comfortable working out a gym with sweaty mongoloids than at home? I want to know. I would not try to tell him otherwise if I had not been a gym member at some point and I was a few years back. Then 4 days later I realized I'd be spending almost 1,000 dollars a year for something I could do at home in a way more comfortable situation and never have to pay for it. It is flat out common sense.

i'll be using it 5 times a week, mostly running and swimming. actually, i don't see it as a waste of money, especially since the i'll be saving over 50 bucks a month cancelling cable. i could have joined a cheaper gym, but i've been there in the past and i think this place is much nicer. i'd argue against working out at home though. it's nice to get out and talk with like-minded people.

See it seems you are motivated, as you are canceling cable and what not, and since you are using it 5 times a week, I really cannot argue against it. Good luck with it brother, hope it's a better gym than I was use to.

For some people they need to get out of the house to work out.
Perhaps he doesn't want to work out at the $15 a month gym with all of the high school aged kids.
$50 a month = $600 a year. That really isn't that much.

600 a year isn't that much? I'm blue collar brother, sorry I don't work on multiple computers a day and get to play online and get paid for it *snicker*
I'm kidding man. All in good fun. But serious fun, in a serious way for fun.

I agree with going out to a Gym instead of working out at home, it's much easier to lose motivation and skip working out at home a few times and then it becomes a habit and stop altogether. If you have someone to go to the Gym with it's even better, you have to make plans and go out and do it, if you enjoy it it's much easier to stay focused going out than staying in and working out.

But if you did make more $$$, you may not mind spending it on your physical appearance if it meant you would get to do so on your own terms.

Hey I'm having fun here, I'm happy to be 180 pounds with limited muscle and a huge beer gut.
And if I did make more money I'll be god damned if I'd ever join a gym again, but I'm happy for whats his face because it's obvious that it is his best option in the matter.
Money is not really the matter here, and making me feel like shit for not making as much as you or whoever is quite irrelevant and immature. I'm actually pretty tired of snobby computer programmers looking down on people who don't know every detail about their profession or who could care less. But this is all in good fun, remember.

Depending where you live, $50 isn't that bad. There are gyms in my area that are nearly $100 per month. (I go to Gold's for $35)

I used to be 5'10 and 230 pounds. I hated it. I lost 50 pounds working as a dishwasher, but still felt weighed down by all of the leftovers by the weight. I joined the school gym for $100 a year, and I've lost even more, gained muscle, and tightened out my excess skin. I feel light, healthy, more energetic (and happier as a result), and I get a hell of a lot more attention from women. The machines at gyms are better than working out at home because they're more balanced than carrying around free weights, and allow you to target certain spots, so I don't have to look like an over-muscled douche.
Just try to figure out what you want, and go pretty regularly at first to work up to something. If you like it, you can keep doing it or try something new.

I get a free membership to the YMCA here because of my new job. I can't wait to take advantage of it. Even the main corporate building has a smaller fitness center in it and I have yet to check that out also. I haven't been to a gym in years, but I'm excited.

Not only are gyms better than working out at home because they have more/better equipment, and because it's easy to lose motivation at home, but they also potentially have racquetball courts!

I dunno. I think with the right equipment, working out at home would be preferrable. I think if I had a treadmill and a 60" flatscreen, I'd prefer that because I could watch TV and work out at the same time, and I wouldn't have deal with douchebag gymrats.

Yeah but with a setup like that, you might have others trying to join the Sydlexia Gym.

You really don't have to deal with douchebags unless you're trying to benchpress or use crappy bicep machines. Even the asshole guys are pretty friendly, because after all, nobody wants to pay money to deal with jackasses, so being a prick will get you reported and punished pretty quickly. The most you'll have to worry about is a guy asking how many more sets you have on a machine.

There are advantages to both home gyms and real gyms
Real gyms:
--Motivation of having other people working out around you (positive for some people, negative for others)
--Good quality equipment, (should be) always in good repair
--Pool, classes and stuff you can take
--Chicks
Home gyms:
--Nobody gets in your way
--Easy access
--Can choose your own TV/music
--Don't have to worry about anybody watching you
I've been working out in commercial gyms for years, but once I can buy a house with a basement I aim to set up my own gym. You save money in the long run, you can get your workouts in before work with less of a hassle, and nobody will laugh at me while I'm doing my burpees in the corner.

During the summer I prefer working out outdoors, especially since all I really do is running and I don't see the point in paying a gym to run on a treadmill when I can run for free in a park. Not that I could afford going to a gym anyway.
That being said it's been raining and getting colder the last couple of days, which has seriously decreased my motivation to get off my butt and do something, especially since classes have started again last week. Luckily I just found out that for a fee of only five bucks per semester I can go to the gym at my college and use all the equipment that the sports students use. So I will most likely start doing that.
