Sega plans to dole out the nostalgia to gamers in early 2009 when they release the newly-announced Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PS3 and Xbox 360. This compilation of some of the most popular first-party games from Sega's 16-bit Genesis years will also contain some bonus content from its 8-bit Master System and some 1980s arcade games.
Currently in development by Backbone Entertainment, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection houses over 40 games in one package and revamped in HD. Currently revealed titles include:

Alien Storm
Columns
Ecco the Dolphin
Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, and 3
Space Harrier
Streets of Rage 1, 2, and 3
Each reproduction will now output in 720p, making them look significantly better on HD TVs. The Ultimate Collection represents the largest group of Sega first-party games ever gathered on one disc, and while you can get some of the retro goodness mentioned above through Xbox Live Arcade or the Wii Virtual Console, it will be cheaper in the long run if you just buy the retail disc when it come out next year.

It is comforting to know that some of the games we played while growing up still have a place in today's market. It may not be healthy to live in the past, but it's nice to know that we can still visit it once in a while.

Where the fuck is Sonic & Knuckles? When combined with Sonic 3, it may be my favorite game of all time. I've played through that game so many times. I'll never forget finally getting all the Emeralds for the first time.

And why the FUCK isn't this coming to the Wii?

Remember when companies made new games?

My guess is that it's on there. Sonic 3 without S&K is incomplete.

if they "revamp the graphics for HD" anything like capcom did with super puzzle fighter ( resizing the sprites and shittily running them through a smoothing filter in photoshop) they can keep their mega collection/

I don't like the idea of retouched graphics. Either it's retro or it's not. There's no in-between.

Also, why the fuck is it called Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection? Not even half of those fucking games are Sonic games.

Meh, I'm not getting a PS3 anytime soon, so I could care less. I'd much rather buy a Genesis and all 40 of the games than buy a $350 plus system and a $50 game. Hell, I probably could get a deal on ebay for a Genesis and sixty games for $200 bucks, so I say fuck it. This game ain't worth two shits. Besides, sonic had his mega collection already. Who cares? On a side note, sega does seem to like making these multi game packs... It started with that one genesis game with the six games on it..... You know what I'm talking about.... The one with Golden Axe and Arch Rivals and some other games....

Well, it's good that Sega Genesis games are still being played, but nothing beats authenticity. I still have a Sega Genesis that works.

Lately, Sega hasn't been doing so well with their ports. Look at that GBA port of Sonic. AWFUL TO THE MAXIMUM.

I would also like to ask: Where the fucking-jumping-Jesus-on-a-stick is Comix Zone?

This collection is beginning to look FAIL-ish the more I think about it.

I already have an actual Genesis, Sonic Mega Collection, the Sega Genesis Collection on PSP, and Genesis emulators on everything from my PC to my DS. I think I'm good. Besides, if the "HD Presentation" is anything like the ports of Streets of Rage and Sonic 2 on Xbox Live Arcade, they don't really look much different.

Like Char said, I have Genesis Collection on PSP. The only thing that isn't on Genesis Collection and on here that I want is SoR2 and 3, that's it and I already have them on VC.

Where are the Phantasy Star games? Arguably the best Genesis RPGs, I have the first three in some shape or form, but I'd REALLY like to see Phantasy Star IV on here; I don't feel like spending fifty-or-so bucks on it at the nearest Slackers, and I also don't feel like downloading a rom for a game I don't own.

Come to think of it, the Shining Force games and Splatterhouse 3 would also be nice additions to the list.

when we get retouched graphics like megaman powered up or super street fighter II turbo HD remix, I'm fine with it.

when we get tryouched graphics like super puzzle fighter 2 HD remix, I am not.

I'll agree on SSF2THD, not so much on Powered Up. The Powered Up level editor was badass though.

I think Phantasy Star I is an unlockable on there, and PS II-IV are on there as well. And on the list, it did say the Shining Force games will be included.

well what I mean is that even if you didn't agree with the artistic decisions, it was still obvious that they made an attempt to up the graphics. a lot of these supposed HD games are terrible.

...And incredibly short (Though the Soundtrack is awesome).

I wonder if Sega's going to have Sonic 1-3, S&K, S&K/Sonic 3, & S&K/Sonic 2 as separate games like they did on the Sonic Mega Collection games. That would be pretty cool.

...And I'd rather play Bare Knuckle 3 than Streets of Rage 3, though I'm more than certain Sega won't include the former.

For shame.

And thanks--Saisyu's one of my favorite characters in the series. I hate how SNK always puts him in at the last minute...

I never owned a genesis, but I got The Sonic Games on my Sonic Gem's Collection one and two along with the PSP Genesis Collection, which has my favorite genesis game, Shinobi 3. This just pitiful...

it might have something to do with how kyo is much more popular, and is pretty much the same character.

lol I guess it's one of Gaming's Greatest Mysteries, like why Konami was allergic to porting the majority of their awesome Beat 'Em Ups in the early '90s (X-Men, Vendetta/Crime Fighters 2, etc.), or how Dan Hibiki copies Yuri's moves, who in turn copies Sakura's... Sad
