So awhile ago, I had the Contravirus on my computer, but I successfully got rid of it, and my computer runs normally.

Well, mostly.

Whenever I save an .exe file to my desktop, my computer refuses to let me move or delete it because it is "in use". The only way for me to delete these files is to kill Explorer through Task Manager and then delete the file through DOS Box. ANy thoughts?

A program called Unlocker may be at least a temporary solution for you -- better than your current situation at any rate:

http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20051018_unlocking_cannot_delete_file_or_folder_error.html

However, that obviously doesn't solve the core problem. I did a little Googling (cannot delete exe file) and found other folks with the same issue but the responses were either worthless or nonexistent.

EDIT: Just a warning, this may not help at all. Unlocker may require the file to literally be in use, which in your case it probably isn't...

If all else fails, reinstall. But I guess you want to save your precious data, so a solution might involve several antivirus programs all looking for traces of the virus and [4chan joke]DELETING FUCKING EVERYTHING[/4chan joke].

Still, I did a bit of googling and here are some Yahoo! Answers and other pages that might be relevant to your problem.

There are a few viruses that cannot be completely removed inside windows. Look for something called a Anti-Virus Boot Disc. It is an ISO that have a anti-virus on it, that runs in dos before windows even loads. As long as you get one with the most recent virus definitions, it will find and completely kill everything, since DOS don't have registries, Task managers, etc, there is no place for viruses to hide.

Also, a repair install of XP does wonders. Kind of the lazy route, and not guaranteed to fix viruses, though.

My friend gave me a disk used by a electronics chain that i will not mention, that is bootable, it loads up a very minimal, xp from the disk, so it has full access to all files. May wan't to give that a shot, just shoot me a pm, and i can ftp it to you, or whatever. It worked great for me.

You can make your own disk like that.

If you're not afraid of trying Linux, however, this company called Canonical makes a distro named Ubuntu. They can send you a shitload of copies for free.

Do you mean Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN) or the Messenger Service, an integral part of XP and Vista?
