This one is for work.
Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.67GHz
4GB 800MHz ram
It is a dream.
Photoshop opens in 2 seconds. Its just so nice. Yay for me!

I just heard the amazing news since sliced bread:
The next version of Photoshop will FINALLY take advantage of video cards!
Sad, isn't it? A graphic design program that has never used video cards, but dumps everything on the CPU.

Legal, Schmegal.
I can't talk, I still only use Paint. I've been recommended to GIMP many times, but I'm afraid to change. What if Paint finds out and starts beating me or starts closing my Romance of the Three Kingdoms game when I make awesome progress but forget to save for 9 hours? I just... can't live my life like that.

I actually have a legit copy of Adobe Creative Suite CS3 installed. Good stuff, and since I do graphic work sometimes it is necessary, so work pays.
Syd, does it help that it comes with a 24" monitor?

This is an exaggeration right? At work I have 2 dual core zeons with 4gb 1066 ram and a SAS array, and photoshop still takes me a bit. But seeing as how CS3 takes advantage of multi processors, it was actually quicker than cs2 was. What kind of drives do you have? I haven't been thoroughly impressed with the SAS drives.

I hate to say it, but application pre-caching in Windows Vista actually works. I am only running it on a 7200rpm drive. In other words, once the application has been opened once after it was installed, it will always open faster in the future as long as it is used once in a while.
From the time I launch the application to the time where it is usable... maybe 4 seconds at max.
On my 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB ram it takes 10-15 seconds to load. That is also on vista.

It's okay, I really like OK Computer too.

You should totally check out the IRC channel.

so, my external HDD died on me.
it sucks cause i had about 70-80 gigs of music, about 80 gigs of videos. i recently got into downloading comics and had about 20 gigs of comics. i had a crap load of pics.
and data retrieval costs about $700+ from what seagate told me. sigh.
what sucks is that i wasnt able to back up anything because i had to reformat my hard drive. so i saved everything on my external, and it died on me lol. fucking life and its irony.
and i didnt feel like setting up a new thread so i hijacked someone's PC thread.

You sure it's the hd itself and not just the exclosure? Did you remove the harddrive from said enclosure, and then insert it directly into your PC?

And don't forget that you can run data recovery software on it if you can get it to mount.

i have this
as far as i know, if i open up the product, that voids the warranty. so i dont want to do that.
and i wouldnt know how to hook it up directly to my pc. i am not computer savvy.
the problem is this: when i plug in the power source to the HDD, i get this weird clicking sound. kind of like something trying to start up and after a while, it dies out. not too sure what that means, just that its dead.

| On a hard disk system, the click of death refers to a similar phenomenon, generally a read/write error during a seek. The hard disk has a hard error (hardware failure that cannot be undone by rebooting) or servomechanism failure, the head actuator will buzz and click as the drive tries to recalibrate. In most cases, the defect is due to physical abuse or a manufacturing error. The cause of the read/write errors is often due to the failure of the read/write heads' preamplifier, a small chip usually found soldered to the flexible cable on the actuator of modern hard drives. IBM's storage division had their own click of death problems in 2001 with the mass failure of their popular Deskstar, dubbed "Deathstar", 75GXP hard disks. Note that not all clicking sounds indicate a defect hard-drive but may be caused by a not fully inserted or broken signal cable. Rarely noise can be generated by powersupply cables or other components close to the signal cable(s). |

Your statement was written as an absolute. It might have been from physical abuse.

well, I would think if the drive worked previously, then he left it in a room full of children, and came back the next day to find it not working, it may not be a manufacturing ewrror.

Drives sometimes fail because they were not assembled or created correctly.
The most famous example was the IBM Deathstars.
