These days, politicians can't say anything, lest someone else pull up an old clip of them saying something contradictory. Why are people so focused on this? Are we so goddam stupid that we don't realize that a person's opinions change over time?

Being able to change your mind used to be a badge of honor. In an interview with Mike Wallace in the 1980s, President Reagan blamed the country's stagnant economy on the Democrats' spending. Wallace then asked Reagan if he felt any personal responsibility for the economy, to which he answered: "Well of course. I used to be a Democrat."

It's not THAT they change their minds, it's WHY they change their minds. If McCain and Obama are switching their opinions on drilling in the US, then fine. If they're doing it because they are in it for extra campaign contributions from oil companies, or just to win votes, then you can view that as a bad change that reflects poorly upon the candidates.

Granted, what you described was a big problem in 2004 with the "flip-flopper" bullshit (I swear, if I hear word on the news one more time, I'm starting a jihad), where changing your mind on an issue based on new information "WUDN'T TUFF!!!" But that does deal with the "why" of the situation.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
