I finally saw this movie for the first time. All I've ever heard is how much of a ripoff Reservoir Dogs is of this movie. I've even heard some people go so far as to say the story, scenes, and characters are identical.

For me, after finally seeing both, I think I can safely say that the idea of a blantant ripoff is an exaggerated statement. If anything, I would say it is a movie with a similar scenerio, with a few scenes borrowed (loosely) as a homage.

One guy on IMDB said it was more like Tarantino took certain elements of City on Fire and placed it in the framework of The True Story of Jesse James. I can't really comment on that because I've never seen the Jesse James movie.

I don't know what has been said from Tarantino. I believe I heard it cited CoF as an inspiration. I don't know what has been said by the creators of CoF. I can only comment on the substance of the movies themselves. Though there are some scenes tht were clearly borrowed, they come across as more of an homage. I don't want to go into detail because of spoilers. Some scenes are nearly identical, but the differences in those scenes are big. Aside from those scenes, only the idea of an undercover cop infiltrating a group of robbers is really the same. They are taken from two entirely different points of view. The backstories and subplots are completely different. The characters are completely different. Only a few things following the heist are the same.

On top of all that, the thing I like most about RD is the dialogue, more specifially the dialogue between White and Pink, as well as the diner scene.

I don't know the intent. It doesn't seem far fetched, to me, that he was making a movie based on a similar scenerio, and decided to make a couple of scenes as an homage to CoF.

What do you guys think?

He gets that a lot. I haven't seen CoF, but he got a lot of shit from people claiming Kill Bill was ripping off Lady Snowblood. I've seen Lady Snowblood, and i would say about the same as your comparasin to CoF. It definitely pays homage to the movie in a couple scenes, and it even uses part of the soundtrack, but I don't think they are much similar other than that. I mean it's not like revenge stories are a new concept.

Its easy to see that Tarantino is an inspired person. Its also easy to see the types of things that inspire each movie. It is easy for me to believe he would pay homage to these inspirations.

I like to watch movies with the commentary. None of the Tarantino movies I own have this feature I would love if they did. But in watching several movie commentaries, you find out that a lot of movies borrow scenes and even direct quotes and use them as an homage.

While I was watching CoF, I kept waiting for all of these similarities that everyone always talks about. It wasn't until the last 30 minutes or so that it really happened. Until then, the only thing it had in common was an undercover cop. I can see where a lot of people get their beef. But when some people make it sound like RD was a carbon copy of CoF, it really hurts their argument.

Yeah, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that he gets a lot of inspiration from movies/shows from when he was younger. His soundtracks are proof enough of that. I think that he takes those stories and genres and does a good job of making them his own.

I completely agree. A lot of people I know hated it, but I loved Death Proof. I love his take on the grindhouse movies. I love the fact that in the movie, it makes it look like parts of the film mess up as if you were actually watching a reel on a projector.
