I used to choose banker as my occupation (he had the most money), and I believe I would purchase between 20 and 30 oxen. That way if one of those damn thieves showed up and stole 17 oxen, I was still well-supplied with oxen.
The rest of my money usually went to bullets. Food and clothing were luxuries I couldn't afford. In retrospect, I probably should have spent more on Dysentary vaccinations.
I don't think I ever quite made it to Oregon, but I did leave a fairly long trail of thought-provoking tombstones.

Yea I always thought waiting, for conditions to improve or riding the ferry across was the cowardly way to do it. I'd either wade through or caulk that sumbitch and float across.

Did anyone ever play the latter-day sequel, The Yukon Trail? Not nearly as exciting, thats for sure. I think they also made an Amazon Trail, but I haven't played it.

I can't even remember what I usually did when I played Oregon Trail. I think I just picked whichever occupation I felt like, and I usually died while attempting to either go through the river or riding the wagon like a raft on it. If I did make it, then I'd most likely die from starvation or sickness.

Amazon Trail was pretty awesome, my middle school had it on the computers as an educational game. You go around meeting natives and photographing wildlife...ok, it was more fun than my description makes it sound...

It sounds like a gayer Jungle version of Pokemon Stadium.

Are there any awesome Oregon Trail hacks out there? I would think someone by now would have made Whoregon Trail or something like that by now.

I have horrible associations with Oregon Trail. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but one time in the fourth grade somebody else named one of the characters after my teacher; that character died, I announced it to the class, and I got sent to the principal's office. Later after seeing the detention report, I found out that the whole reason why I got sent to the office was because I "seemed happy that she died". Whatever.

That must have sucked ass Cam.
Edit : I said that I played Oregon Trail 5.0 at school, and I was incorrect. I played Oregon Trail Deluxe.
Edit Edit : You Guys think that the rafting down the river is hard? That is easy, I say trying to find the right deal when trading is the hardest part of the game and Trying to keep your peeps alive.

Goddamn Pokemon Snap.
An Oregon Trail MMO would actually be pretty fun.
Also, there's nothing like the old classic Mac version.

yay, good olde Oregon Trail. I used to play the Macintosh cd rom version, not sure what it was called, but the hunting was so much easier with the mouse. I still would play the old Apple II version just for nostalgia's sake. That game was classic.

I never played Oregon Trail.
You can whip out pitchforks and torches. Be warned, however, I have a fairly decent guitar and I will not hesitate. I will snap strings at you.
And I have many of them. Oh, how many strings I have.

Please tell me you clip the excess off the string after restringing, I can't stand people with a foot of excess string waving around the guitar head, they're just begging to put someone's eye out.

I was playing it in my Technical Writing class and I beat it. I was a banker and I bought 3 yokes of oxen. Only had OX die, and surprisingly no one died. I shot 1 deer and bought food whenever I ran low. Thats the first time I ever beat it let alone with nobody dying.

Of course I do. It's not that useful having all that junk there.
But I do create garrottes and traps with leftovers.
