I've had it for a while, but have never played it yet. Since I replayed IV a few weeks ago or so, I thought I might as well move on to V. Hopefully, I'll stick with it. It didn't take me very long at all to beat IV and I think I've got some free time to play V.

In my opinion, V kind of had a weak storyline, but it improved on the class system introduced in FFIII. I also thought the Red Mage class took WAY too long to level up; 999 battle points for a class that can only use up to level 3 magic? I think I'll pass.

Final Fantasy in general is known for pretty weak storyline. They are all pretty much variations of the Good Vs Evil/Evil King/Evil Mage/Evil Corporation/Evil Rogue Soldier.
The characters themselves, and the way they develop and change over the course of the story is the main focus, as are battle strategys and level grinding. I am in no way dissing the games, as Final Fantasy 6 is my favorite console RPG bar none, and the reasons are the characters. Kefka was like Bozo on meth.

I didn't think the storyline for FFX was weak at all.

FF V was my first Final Fantasy and it didn't steer me away. It's a pretty solid game.
Out of topic, has anybody checked out the Dawn of Souls release for the GBA? Was FF2 always that broken?

You should totally check out the IRC channel.
While you're at it, go check out my band, Her Majesty's Heroines.

Dawn of Souls sucks. I had a fan-translated NES ROM of FF2 and it was much better.

I really like this game so far. I grew up on Final Fantasy IV and VI. They are my favorite two games in the series in that order. The feel of this game is a perfect mix of the two, which makes sense because it is the game that came between them.
I don't want to consult any guides my first time through. But I was wondering if anybody knows about how many hours it should take me to finish this.

If you're good, somewhere between 24 and 27.

If I'm good? I dunno. How long was it supposed to take me to beat FFIV?

The only one that you should avoid is 2, it's very hard for people to get into.
V is great, the job system is very good to play around with. The story is good if you accept it. It's not so much good/evil. It's more of the characters finding themselves, sorta like VI. Sure, there's evil in the sense of the protagonist, but just as VI did with their characters, each character is developed very well, and you grow to like them. The characters don't take a backseat to the villain like what happened in some later FF games, where you don't even really get to know much about them.

Honestly, I never had a problem with FF2. But I fucking hated FF3 (the real one, not FF6) in its original form. I hated that all four characters were just palette swaps of each other. Either give me four distinct characters who are part of a specific storyline, or let me choose the combat class of my four cookie-cutter douchebags. I played the game for about an hour than gave up out of disgust.

I can't seem to stay in a consistent groove with FF2. The leveling system in that game is kinda confusing, and I don't like it all that well.
Final Fantasy V is a pretty good game. I've got the PSOne and the GBA versions. It's got a good soundtrack to it, and the storyline ain't that bad as well. How can you go wrong with a goof like Gilgamesh?

Syd, you do realize that you can, in fact, "choose the combat class of [your] four cookie-cutter douchebags." That's what the statistic development system in the game is all about, hence the generic pallet swap artwork for the characters in the default class. To have taken that screen shot, you would have had to have been far enough in the game to acquire the first six or so job classes.

I beat FF3 on an emulator twice a few years back, myself. I wonder if it'll hit the VC as an import title, DS version notwithstanding.

I disagree. That was a huge step backwards from the previous 2 games. In FF1, you got to build 4 characters from the ground up. They had no backstory, but you got to pick their classes. In FF2, you had four unique characters, each with their own sprite who were part of a greater story. In the NES version of FF3, you're four generic orphans who all look the same. It's awful. The DS remake fixed this by giving each character a distinct name and story.
When I played the DS remake, I also learned that you could switch classes, something that I hadn't learned in the first game due to my impatience with it. I probably would have liked the NES version better if I had learned this.

Unlikely. The import VC titles we get are all games that require little to no translation work. I believe Sin & Punishment's translated menus are the extent of VC-related translation work.

Syd did you play translated version of 3 for the NES? I really enjoyed FF3 for some reason... The translation I had was really rough, but I loved it because it gave me a great feel of FF I/V intermixed. I also loved how you had to have characters in your party for certain times of the game to help you progress through. I played both the NES/DS version, and I actually like the NES more, if only they had translated it....
I can see your gripe with having four characters that are basically palate swaps, the characters from FF games are what make the games.

Yeah, I played a translated NES ROM, then gave up on it. This was quite awhile ago, probably like 6 or 7 years ago, shortly after I finished FF2 with a translation patch. Then obviously I played it again briefly earlier to get the screenshot.
If I had had an instruction manual back then and known about class changes, I probably would have really liked it... I love the class system into FF5. I really should go back and try it again, so that I have a better idea of what was added into the DS version.

When playing the translation I had (which was REALLY rough, it got the main story down, but not much depth), I didn't see too much improvement other than to the story, and the sprites. I actually preferred the choppy 8-bit graphics to the graphical update of the DS version. If you have time to invest in it, I'd give it another whirl. If you beat the DS version first, I don't think you'll appreciate it as much, but if you're a big Final Fantasy fan, it wouldn't hurt. Plus, since it's emulated, you can just speed through it.

I can understand the graphics thing. I'm not too keen on FFIV with new graphics. If I had liked FF3 the first time around, I might not have liked the DS version.

FF V has probably my favorite job system yet. A bunch of classes, that when fully leveled, contribute to your normal class to make a very modular system that continues to reward you for any progress made. Yes please.
Story wasn't complex, but it got the job done. Gilgamesh is a great villian, even if Exdeath isn't.

Dawn of Souls was indeed terrible, and ridiculously easy. I'd only recommend it to someone who isn't an RPG fan, but wants to hear the stories of both games.
And as for the DS remake of III, I can't get past the damn cave after the Djinn.
